Retail investors outlook 2023

  1. 1. Retail Investor Outlook We asked 1328 retail investors about their past and future investment considerations Study conducted in Dec 2022
  2. 2. Stocks are poised for a significant bounce back A staggering 53% of retail investors are considering to buy stocks which leads us to believe that once bad market news becomes less prominent the stock market will snap back rapidly. Percentages displayed as % of the population
  3. 3. ... confidence in the stock markets’ potential is high A further indicator in retail investors’ confidence in the stock market is that stocks and related investments rank at the top of investment consideration for repeat investors. The same cannot be said for crypto, which is near the bottom of the asset classes when it comes to repeat investment. % shown are of the entire population
  4. 4. % shown are only for the latin american population Latin American men were crazy about crypto But their enthusiasm has cooled with just 22.5% saying they are considering to buy crypto again in the future. Oh and Latino’s really don’t like bonds...
  5. 5. % shown are only for the entire population Home ownership has declined by 7% in the last 5 years The study does not show conclusively why this is the case but we can speculate that the high interest rates interrupted the normal cycle of selling properties and then buying other properties leading to a large decline in home ownership worldwide.

Other drivers could be the impact of covid, the rise of digital nomads, forced sales due to inability to pay for variable interest mortgage rates,...
  6. 6. % shown are only for the entire population Home ownership falls off a cliff after 50 This is driven by Asia and Africa having very low ownership rates among the +50 bracket. The study does not show causality but we can speculate that this may be due to lack of healthcare or historical poverty preventing this generation from acquiring properties in the first place. Boomers aren’t all that rich after all
  7. 7. % shown are only for the entire population Precious metals are loved but not bought Despite many considering precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum as an investment they are not often bought and held and those who do buy them are not considering investing more in them.
  8. 8. % shown are only for the entire population An absolute majority now outright rejects Crypto as an investment While only 24% of people have invested in crypto so far, there is an absolute majority (51%) says they never will. That leaves the potential buyer pool of crypto investors at 25% of the worlds population. A tough sell though as 30,05% of the worlds population is not investing in any asset class currently.
  9. 9. % shown are only for the entire population But Crypto is still in play with first-time investors Stocks are the most considered, then homes, precious metals and surprisingly Altcoins.
  10. 10. % shown are only for the entire population Bond ownership has declined by 4% worldwide despite increased interest rates Guys don’t seem to dig bonds as a solid 4% of male bond owners shifted from bonds into other assets over the past years.

As bonds rank low in consideration as a bear market investment (9,81%) presumably, the fear of defaults outweigh the higher interest rates
