Value to our partner
The financial market environment of recent years has made it more and more difficult for our institutional
clients to achieve satisfactory yields at acceptable levels of risk. Record-low interest rates and a general
climate of growing market uncertainty and volatility have made it more of a challenge than ever for insurers
and pension funds to realise the returns needed to meet their future liabilities. At the same time, growing
public attention for responsible investing – that is, the environmental, social and government aspects of
large-scale investments – have placed new, additional demands on these institutions.
Against this background, a newspaper interview with the CEO of a Dutch development bank caught the
attention of one of our Fixed Income investment team managers. The bank, which has invested in the private
sector in developing countries and emerging markets for almost half a century, with the goal of empowering
entrepreneurs to improve local conditions, envisioned a major role for institutional investors in its growth
strategy.
Our team manager quickly saw partnership possibilities and contacted the bank. The ensuing discussions,
which were expanded to include our sales and product development teams, revealed the extent to which NN
Investment Partners and the bank’s ideas and goals complemented each other. Two years after the
publication of the interview, the two partners are in the process of developing the emerging markets loans
product. The strategy is to build a diversified portfolio of loans in emerging markets by participating in new
loans arranged by our partner, with a long-term view and a “buy-and-hold” philosophy. The product targets
loans linked to financial institutions, energy, agribusiness and telecommunications - sectors where our
partner has ample experience and where it sees the most promise for improvement in developing nations.
By partnering with the bank as a specialist investor with a proven track record, NN Investment Partners is
able to offer its institutional partners efficient access to an attractive illiquid asset class, which has
traditionally had high barriers to entry. These loans provide investors with interesting yield opportunities in
the current low-yield environment and enable them to diversify their fixed income portfolios with exposure to
a new type of borrowers in emerging economies. For our development bank partners, the partnership has
provided access to an important group of large-scale, long-term investors who are eager to contribute to
sustainable economic development in emerging countries. In so doing, we have expanded the bank’s
resources for carrying out its mission.

The challenge Our approach Value to our partner The financial market environment of recent years has made it more and more difficult for our institutional clients to achieve satisfactory yields at acceptable levels of risk. Record-low interest rates and a general climate of growing market uncertainty and volatility have made it more of a challenge than ever for insurers and pension funds to realise the returns needed to meet their future liabilities. At the same time, growing public attention for responsible investing – that is, the environmental, social and government aspects of large-scale investments – have placed new, additional demands on these institutions. Against this background, a newspaper interview with the CEO of a Dutch development bank caught the attention of one of our Fixed Income investment team managers. The bank, which has invested in the private sector in developing countries and emerging markets for almost half a century, with the goal of empowering entrepreneurs to improve local conditions, envisioned a major role for institutional investors in its growth strategy. Our team manager quickly saw partnership possibilities and contacted the bank. The ensuing discussions, which were expanded to include our sales and product development teams, revealed the extent to which NN Investment Partners and the bank’s ideas and goals complemented each other. Two years after the publication of the interview, the two partners are in the process of developing the emerging markets loans product. The strategy is to build a diversified portfolio of loans in emerging markets by participating in new loans arranged by our partner, with a long-term view and a “buy-and-hold” philosophy. The product targets loans linked to financial institutions, energy, agribusiness and telecommunications - sectors where our partner has ample experience and where it sees the most promise for improvement in developing nations. By partnering with the bank as a specialist investor with a proven track record, NN Investment Partners is able to offer its institutional partners efficient access to an attractive illiquid asset class, which has traditionally had high barriers to entry. These loans provide investors with interesting yield opportunities in the current low-yield environment and enable them to diversify their fixed income portfolios with exposure to a new type of borrowers in emerging economies. For our development bank partners, the partnership has provided access to an important group of large-scale, long-term investors who are eager to contribute to sustainable economic development in emerging countries. In so doing, we have expanded the bank’s resources for carrying out its mission.
