Good Morning everybody, I’m Sonia Cerullo I’m here on the behalf of Stefano Consiglio, He regrets and apolgizes for not being here I’m from Vallesaccarda a small town in the province of Avellino. I am the president of the association Agora and I’m here as Territory Manager for The Baronia Area in the Angels for Travellers Project I’m here today to talk about the story of Angels for travelers and from where and how everything started with Stefano,
One day Stefano was sitting on the bus, looking outside at the tons of rubbish all over Naples when a weird chat caught his attention. Two Spanish visitors asked for information for the nearest bus stop to reach their hostel. At that point many other people stopped and joined the tourists to give a helping hand.
The impression was that the people Were driving the tourists attention out of the piles of rubbish into the treasures of Naples Teatro San Carlo,
Royal Palace
Vesuvio
He was impressed by that episode. It is said that Neapolitans behave badly towards Naples and do not love it. W. Goethe said that: ‘Naples is a paradise inhabited by devils’ Some say that Neapolitans are selfish, Careless They have no public spirit No Common sense ( as the pic shows) Are not fond of their city And this is the reason why Naples will never improve. However, the Bus EVENT shows a different story. The helpful Neapolitans shared a strong sense of belonging to Naples
So Stefano Consiglio started thinking that people can really contribute and work In order to improve their communities in a positive way And this is true, especially in a situation of serious crisis
These thoughts sparked off a light: the desire to escape from Naples, suddenly changed into a desire to do something for the city. So The idea of Angels for travelers
The idea was launched on Kublai platform, a collaborative environment for the development of ideas and projects. The project was shared, discussed and improved by almost 150 person. So we had the opportunity to have suggestions, lessons learnt and best practice taken from other experiences.
And so the idea was translated in concrete actions. Angels for Travellers is a travelling web community originated from the assumption that when someone wants to visit a new city, He is looking for social experience. And what is better than being guided by local people that live there? Let’s see our video!
How you have seen, The Angels suggestions give the opportunity to visit new places in a very genuine way. In this way travellers can join and share the daily life of the city and be part of it. Through the community, travelers that arrive in a place (i.e Naples) can choose an Angel to receive information. Angel will provide personalized recommendations about places worth visiting. All of this is absolutely free of charge. Often Angels and travellers can decide to meet for a coffee or going out together.
When the project was launched the big matter was: Would people be willing to give free information to unknown travellers? In July 2009, two months after the launch of the platform, already 190 Neapolitan Angels were ready to give advice to travellers arriving in the city. Today they are more than 700. This project has been realized in a tough city like Naples And could certenly be implemented worldwide
And so in 2010 the web platform was updated to allow people from all over the world to become an Angel In their own town.
Then, the project was sponsored as pioneering idea from “Fondazione con il Sud" and this has allowed the creation of local offices in southern Italy managed by voluntary associations. The objective was to involve through the local partners ,citizens and local actors , to promote the local communities on the web and on the online travellers community, and to raise funds for the sustainability of the garrison itself, but above all to involve local autorities that deal with tourism ( bottom-up approach) to promote the project and its goals. In this sense, local partners of the project are “recruiting angels”, Creating a network between the site angels and local angels, in order to involve local governaments to share and support the project.
The idea spread and today many other cities have their angels; in Italy there are almost 350 communities; in the world we have 500 communities and more than 3.800 Angels. This result has increased our confidence in our fellow citizens. People are ready to contribute in a positive way for the benefits of their own communities. I believe in people, I believe in a new economy, I believe to the necessity of a shared administration of territory I believe to the need for cooperation between governments, businesse and the third sector for the tourism development of the territories . Even the devils that live in Naples are ready to do their part.
Threats can be turned into opportunities through people’s creativity. But this positive energy can be used in a positive way to help and implement the project through new social network , People , Organizations and Management Models, able to develop best practises that have a positive impact on the local area. This can be done mobilizing the citizens’ will in order to do something useful for their community. The simple idea of Angels for travellers, born during a bus ride, achieved social innovation.
But, what is important is a Management Model fostering the condition for the project success. A good idea has to involve common objectives A good project has to be founded on a cooperative approach A good project shares lessons learnt and best practice taken from other experiences. A good project involves and manages stakeholders A good project has to be founded on management models able to engage citizens. A good project needs a continuous improvement
We believe that the project will be the springboard for a new way of understanding the journey, not as a moment of consumption but of contact and cultural growth and a spur to develop sustainable tourism in our territories. Cities can rediscover themselves only if its citizens can regain possession. Transforming yourself into an angel you can speed this process of re-appropriation. Watching our city through the eyes of a Venetian traveler, Vienna, Madrid, Berlin can push every citizen to take more care of where he lives. We think that our Angels for Travellers are Angels for a sustainable and responsible tourism. We would love our children to have the opportunity to get angels for travelers in each city they would visit when they will be grown up You can be a part of our project if you decide to become an angel of your city.
