Theory (2 Credits) (20 Hours)
Introduction to Computer System and functions of its components, evaluation of Computers and their
classification, hardware and software. Number System: Decimal, Binary, Octal and Hexadecimal and their
inter conversions. Representation of integer and real numbers, characters and codes (BCD, ASCII and
EBCDIC), error detecting and correcting codes (Parity, Gray and Hamming codes), binary and floating point
arithmetic (addition and subtraction).

Basic concepts of Boolean algebra and their electronic implementation through various logic gates,

commands, View and Queries, transaction commands, Specifying Constraints & Indexes in SQL. Relational
Data Base Design: Function Dependencies & Normalization for Relational Databases. Informal design
guidelines for relation schemas, Functional Dependencies. Normal forms based on primary keys (INF, 2NF,
3NF& BCNF). Lossless join & Dependency preserving decomposition. Multi-valued dependencies, join
dependencies (4NF & 5NF), Denormalization.
