credit.2 of them Best actors. One of this was for Chattakari and the other
for the film “A” by Director “B” .In the film A Adoor Bhasi was cast as/in
the title role. This film A attacked the feudal system and police atrocities
during the feudal period in Kerala with Kuttanad as backdrop. This film
shook up the feudal foundations especially of the established Christian
social traditions. Adoor Bhasi called it one of his most memorable roles he

46. After making his entry into the tinsel world with the Kannada movie he moved on to
another language to make his next film. The end result was a Malayalam movie
Written by the prolific T.Damodaran.
The movie is a near realistic take on a lower middle class community somewhere around
Fort Cochin consisting mainly of Christians. These people were earlier making their living
by fishing in the sea but with the Port Trust having stone walled the entrance to the seas,
they were forced to look up to the Port Trust for jobs promised to them. Against this
background the film is set.
The film is a true case study on trade unionism in Kerala and the impact it leaves upon
the people connected to it willingly or unwillingly. Though more than 3 decades old the
film is still very relevant even today. The film very easily manages to stand out as a
reflection of the socio-political set up in that part of the state during the 80’s.
Considering that the director does not hail from Kerala the effort needs to be all the
more commended because this is nearly as good as any native genius filmmaker could
come up with.
Interestingly Ilaiyaraja the music director of the movie went on to take the tune of
‘Theeram Thedi’ song from this movie and churned it out to a very popular number in
Tamil in the film Komberi Mookan ( Roja Ondru Mutham Ketkum Neram ) This tamil movie

55. These are the words from the famous cinematographer Ramachandra Babu about a film maker and his first movie.
Our friendship continued and when I started my first feature film VIDYARTHIKALE ITHILE ITHILE under the
Direction of John Abraham, he used to be with our unit and later on joined with Director Ramu Kariat.
When the opportunity came for him to direct an independent feature film, P.A.Latheef who was the Production
Manager helped the venture and I joined with his first venture.
Editor Ravi, John, Latheef, He, myself and others used gather there for script discussion. Though the original
script was written by Pamman based on a story by Psycho Muhammad, He rewrote it several times.
As part of research, we visited Kilpauk Mental Hospital and spoke to some of the Doctors regarding the special kind
of mental condition called "FUGUE" .
The script work took a long time and different versions were written by him until he was fully satisfied with the
result.Our team consisting of Producer Mohammed Bappu, he, Editor Ravi, Latheef and myself went to Kollam to
meet NANA Film magazine's Proprietor Krishnaswamy Reddiar.
At that time in KUNGUMAM magazine Uroob and Kadavanadu Kuttikrishnan were also present during the script
reading session. After hearing the subject, they suggested that the film be titled differently instead of the
proposed “Paalayanam”.
The film was a commercial success while maintaining its artistic quality.
It won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film and National Film Award for Best Feature
Film in Malayalam.

to have been processed entirely in India.
Shot with a 35 mm camera. the frames have been blown up to a certain measure at the Prasad Film
Laboratory, Madras. A spokesman of the laboratory remarked : “We have proved that What the Sippys and
others did in London can be done now in Madras.“
Initially, the film was released in 4 theatres in Trivandrum. Ernakulam. Trichur and Calicut - (At that time
Kerala boasted the largest number of a special type of theatres like these in India.)
As the producer expected heavy responses from film goers due to the heavy publicity blitz that was initiated
across Kerala,the producer has booked these 4 centres for 25 weeks.
He also believed that as people are expected to flock to the theatres, the film will have a gross Rs 50 lakh
from these four theatres alone. With in 2 days 1,000-odd rural centres were also screened with 35 mm
stereoscopic prints of Z to cash on the collections.
The producer also said that his own distribution set-up and personal contact with so many exhibitors that he
is sure that the film will never flop.Z received good collections from theatres and became the highest-
grossing Malayalam film of the time.
