2. POP The genre we have chosen to research is pop as it not only has a wide variety of conventions but it is the chosen genre for our music video, therefore it would help us for our planning to do some background research on the genre.
3. Recent Video’s in the Pop Genre Artists like Miley Cyrus, who conveys the new conventions of pop videos where there are flash cars, women showing more skin and having a setting somewhere hot and sunny ( especially in male videos) Also male pop groups like Jls who wear bright colors in there videos to stand out is part of the pop culture, also in most male music videos the convention of having half naked woman dancing around you is also a norm as it caters to a male and female audience as the males will enjoy seeing the women in the video whilst the women will envy the women in the video
4. Also most pop videos carry out a storyline, with the artist change in costume or role, for example AvrilLavinge who in her music video Girlfriend she plays a role of three girls fighting over one boy, she also carries out a storyline of what girl gets the boy. Also in a pop music video it is most likely that alike this video that the artist will feature a band with them and perform a dance routine, as it shows they have more skills.
5. A very common aspect used in pop music videos is the new technology used, as in modern music videos a lot of editing is used to create a memorable music video and make the artist look better for example in the Cher Lloyd video of Swagger Jagger. Also in modern day pop music videos they put on a huge amount of makeup as well to change the way an artist looks, say for instance if they have any imperfections like spots or blemishes they either use makeup or use editing to clear the skin.
6. 80’s Music videos In the 80’s we see how codes and conventions if videos have evolved over time as technology has improved and fashion has changed over time, although the best music videos have been said to have taken place in the 80’s.
7. Michael Jackson – Beat It Michael Jacksons ‘Beat It’ video follows a typical linear structure by Todorov. However compared to recent music videos where everything is glamorous, the video was shot in a car park with male dancers in basic clothing. The extras look like working class people with no make up and very little editing as they relied more on cinematography.
8. Wham Whams video of ‘Wake me up before you go’ the band is fitted in bright colored costumes which were a famous 80’s trend. The video is shot in a concert which was common in the 80s as it portrayed the stars as icons. The was a main singer with the whole band in the back playing their instruments which was more common in the 80s than now. The dance moves were just improvised whereas now most music videos have choreographed dance moves. We now rarely see bands playing their instruments in music videos whereas in the 80sit was more common.
9. Take That In Take That’s ‘Everything Changes’ there were no girls dancing around half naked, the video was set in one place and there were close ups of the artists face when they’re singing which is something you wouldn’t really expect from recent boy bands as most close up are of flashy cars & cleavage of half naked women.
10. Abba Abba’s ‘The winner takes it on’ was a very basic video, there was limited editing but dependent on cinematography e.g. camera shots, which today is usually unheard of.
