1. The scene I have used to analysethe use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound is
the scenein Insidious when thebaby is having a nap in her roomand the mum
hears strange, masculine and deep voices coming from the baby’s room
through the baby monitor. As shemoves towards the stairs leading to the
roomwhere the other baby monitor is the voice of the baby monitor gets
louder and the voices end on a shoutthat leads to the baby hysterically crying.
The 2 most prominentsounds in this scene are firstly the voice coming from
the monitor as it is strange, unexpected and scary to be coming from a babies
roomthen the other prominent sounds comeafter the voice with the mother
gasping as the baby begins to cry after the voice. These sounds are prominent
as it shows that these sounds show thegenre of the film and show how the
use of sound portrays the genre even more.
In this sceneyou can easily identify the diegetic sounds as the voices and
dialogue coming fromthe baby monitor is the highlight of the scene. The
whole scene is about what the mother can hear from the monitor. Not only
does the diegetic sounds coming from it show this the camera uses a close up
of the monitor many times in this scene to show the sounds coming from it is
important.
The non-diegetic sounds I can hear is the music in the background that sets an
intense tone on the scene. The music volumeincrease as the mum gets closer
to the bedroomand the voices on the monitor gets louder. As soon as the
voice shouts and the baby begins to cry a huge sound effect of a bang type
sound is played to show the effect the demon had in this scene.
Both uses of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds really helps the audience
understand that this scene is very intense as the visible character is unknown
what sheis hearing fromthe monitor which also portrays the horror genre.
Also the use of volume was very effects as both the diegetic and non-diegetic
sounds gotlouder to make the scene even moreintense as again the subjectof
the scene(demon) is still unknown.
