De Rijksoverheid hevelt taken over naar gemeenten. De gemeente wordt in 2014 en 2015 verantwoordelijk voor ondersteuning op het gebied van jeugdzorg, werk en inkomen en zorg aan langdurig zieken en ouderen. De gemeente zal daarom vaker het eerste aanspreekpunt voor inwoners zijn. Niet alleen komen er nieuwe taken op gemeenten af, de bezuinigingen op de budgetten zijn fors. De gemeente moet dus meer gaan doen met minder geld. De gemeente Tynaarlo heeft de veranderingen aangegrepen om de ondersteuning te vernieuwen en deze op een doeltreffende manier te organiseren. Dit vraagt om één samenhangende aanpak op alle leefgebieden van zorg, welzijn, werk en inkomen. En om maatwerk, waarbij de inwoner met een ondersteuningsvraag centraal staat. Hoe we dit als gemeente willen doen is te zien in deze slideshow. De inwoner is in de eerste plaats zélf verantwoordelijk voor zijn/haar eigen welzijn en zelfredzaamheid, samen met de directe omgeving. Bij het bieden van ondersteuning zal een groter beroep op de inwoner worden gedaan. De gemeente zal vaker de vraag stellen ‘Wat kunt u zelf doen?’ of ‘Wie kan u hierbij helpen?’. Als een inwoner andere (tijdelijke) ondersteuning nodig heeft, wordt er gezamenlijk gezocht naar een oplossing op maat. Wanneer mogelijk met lichte en algemene ondersteuning. En wanneer nodig met specialistische hulp en ondersteuning. Wanneer er meerdere problemen spelen binnen een gezin of huishouden wordt er gewerkt met één plan en één aanspreekpunt namens de gemeente. Om zo te voorkomen dat inwoners bij meerdere loketten hun verhaal moeten doen, gegevens moeten aanleveren en moeten wachten op een besluit. Of dat er meerdere hulpverleners langs elkaar heen werken bij de ondersteuning.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
