MikelDufrene also writes that the aesthetic object expresses it’s creator, not just because it is a product of his activity but also because it is the expression of his being. P. 414 Dufrene rejected the poetical position of the Letterist movement as too naive and conservative in its attempt to explain Surrealist concepts of poetry. In postwar Paris philosophers like Dufrene took a paradoxical position suspended between pessimism concerning the revolutionary potential of the neo-avantgarde movement in and a need to transform the internal structure of the aesthetic object; to emphasize the collaborative nature of the artistic project; and to demonstrate the relocation of artistic practices in the collective urban space of advanced industrial consumer culture. The so-called death of easel painting (touted by neo-avantgardists) and the shift out of the studio out into the streets did not hold. The sociocultural divide between high and low culture, representation and participation continued to be maintained until more recently when the promise of online social media (new, mobile, locative, etc.) threatened to bridge these divides.
Playing ARt:This project explores interfaces that make use of the touchscreen, camera, and accelerometer – features that provide users with ways to generate representations of their world (imagination). More specifically, this project investigates emergent (game) play through procedural drawing.
Game designers encourage emergent play by providing tools to players such as placing web browsers within the game engine (such as in EVE Online, The Matrix Online), providing XML integration tools and programming languages (Second Life), and so on. I am interested in the game play in Augmented Reality (augmented spaces) which can be experienced on the iPad/iPhone (mobile, locative media).
Game design lends itself to programmatic and procedural constructs to perform specific tasks like drawing. One example is the Exquisite Corpse. Modern artists have used mental procedural methods to ‘build up’ their art. Klee's Pedagogical Sketchbooks are of interest to artists of all terrains, as well as lesser known’s such as Wolfgang Schultz (Wols) who used the term ‘crystallization of thoughts into lines’ to describe works that were built up using repetitive gestures to bring a drawing to fruition.
Celia painted the front wall of her loft black and drew a grid of eight-inch squares in pencil. A sign, paint and brushes invited people to paint within the squares, continuing the lines of adjacent squares. The piece was inspired by the Surrealist Game Exquisite Corpse and the computer game Sim City.
Playing Art will use similar game mechanics as Exquisite Corpse.

The HTML5 Canvas ElementGesture drawing on a HTML5 canvas captures the essence of the form (ex. a dancer)being replicated on the tablet/screen. Elaborate details matter little – the mostimportant part is the movement and shape as it relates to the negative space around it.These gesture drawings are studies of form in motion.
Putting It All Together Isaac Kulka‟s “canvas generator” merges two technologies: HTML5 & the Argon Augmented Reality browser. I am building on this to create an art game inspired by the Exquisite Corpse. The challenge is to create a version of the game that makes use of the AR interface and experience.
The PlanThis Embed AR frame markersprototype (see image top right) in awill be game board tofurther trigger/display an HTML5developed canvas element thatlater. contains more content. Create AR markers that allow players to add their own images or drawings overlaid on the canvas and real objects (like a collage).
In the future, color coding can assign categories to image databases thatplayers can choose images from to create the art.
The Prototype Players pass around the iPad to add to a hybrid/collage image, made up of images, i.e. background & doodles. Player(s) can screen capture and save the final composite image.
One Game, Many Results The ability to embed frame markers and display multiple images inside a canvas element (figure/ground, doodles) will give players several options to create collaborative art. This experience allows players to use vector elements singularly or combine them into configurations of their choosing.
Final Notes Trial and error process using the still-developing Argon Augmented Reality Browser; constraints required several adjustments to the original plan; Some features like “hudding” canvas overlays work in some cases and not in others; As Argon (markers) becomes more stable further development will enable more complex game mechanics (ex. choosing an image from a database); Multiple channels in Argon will allow for additional content to be added to the user experience such as panoramas, real objects and spaces.
