- Definitions – start with some broad concepts and crystallize them all into a concise definition of mental toughnessRebounding from mistakes:Basketball is such a fast-paced game that this is critical – you have to learn from your mistakes without dwelling on them Example: Player throws ball awayBangs head and explains why he threw it awayWhile he is explaining, his man scores on a wide open layup on the other endPlayer bangs head again and starts to explain why he didn’t get back on defenseAs he explains the point guard fires a pass that he loses out of boundsThis can be difficult for young players who want badly to succeed i.e. move from Frosh to Jv or Jv to Varsity – gets hard on himself when he makes a mistake Usually only making things worse.

- This definition combines all of the concepts that I’ve discussed up to this point and crystallizes them into one succinct statement.This was put together by coach Brian Williams my partner at coaches Academy – he has used it in his basketball programs – to teach toughness to his players – Puts it in written form in an effort to make it part of the program culture - ------------------------Okay. Before I get into concepts for developing toughness in your players and in your practices, I’m going to quickly talk about what toughness is not. These are qualities that are sometimes mistakenly associated with toughness.
