The Importance of Friends
Author: Janie Franz - Updated: 4 February 2013 |

Comment

When we were very small, we realized that having friends was important to us. Some of us even had
imaginary friends or our beloved pets became our intimate pals. Sometimes, even our teddies and
other stuffed animals snuggled with us at night and listened to our dreams and secrets. The need for
friends continued as we grew into our teens and began to find our own identities. Friends were a big
part of forming our personalities and supporting who we had become. As adults, it is still important
for us to have friends. Our spouses often are our most intimate friends. But friends, outside of family
bonds, can be our greatest comfort and allies.

What Are Friends
Friends are people who like us in spite of our faults and who listen to us and tell us the truth. Friends
support our decisions and tell us when we're foolish. They laugh with us and share our grief. They
are companions and share our interests. They argue with us and stimulate our minds. They are
people we aren't afraid of telling our secret wishes to or what is really on our minds.

Number of Friends
You don't have to have many. Sometimes, one good, true friend is all you need. At other times, it's
good to have a group of friends so you can be a part of the bond among you without having to work
so hard at friendship. You all then share a part of the duties of being friends. Sometimes, you're the
one at the center of attention. At other times, you can just go along. But all of you are loyal to each
other and help each other when you can.

How Friends Help
Friends are your support system. When you can depend on friends, you feel safe and cared for. You
belong. During times of conflict, prisoners of war had a list of things that helped them survive. At the
top of the list was a support system. Having a buddy who shared their will to live and helped them
see the positives in their situation was essential to their survival.
Friends offer acceptance and emotional support. They also help occasionally with the practical
aspects of day-to-day living, cooking a meal (or taking you out), helping with chores, or giving you a
lift when you need one. Friends also are there to offer advice, an ear to listen, or a shoulder to cry
on. Friendships help us feel connected and less isolated. And, according to Pamela M. Peeke, MD,
a professor of medicine at the University of Maryland, friends can even bolster our immune systems.

Friends and Stress
Friends also help us reduce stress. Not only do they listen to us when we need to vent, but they also
provide much needed diversion from what is stressing us. Participating in shared interests and
activities with friends helps us forget about problems at work or at home. For a brief time, we can
lose ourselves in a pleasant activity and perhaps laugh and breathe easier.

Gender Differences
Interestingly, a recent study by Pennsylvania State University revealed something that men and
women have probably known for a long time. Men and women react differently to stress in a social
context. Men have a tendency to either go off by themselves or engage in a highly competitive sport
with other men. Women seek each other out and commiserate, either engaging in a group project
(charity work or the old fashioned sewing circle) or just a confab together (going for coffee or having
a girls night out).
Regardless of gender, friendships help lower our blood pressure, our heart rates, and our cholesterol
levels. The Nurses' Health Study at the Harvard Medical School concluded that, for women, not
having friends was as bad for their health as obesity or smoking. In fact, friendships can help us live
longer, and they can most definitely help us manage stress.

Previous Page

What really is family? is it those of whom we share our DNA or the people in which we can depend on and
confide in? It ultimately depends on each and everyone of our situations. Yes, the woman who gave birth to
you, is biologically your mother and the man who impregnated her, your farther. But can you really call your
biological relatives 'Your Family' when they neglect you and spend their time on things that are more
appealing to them than caring and providing for their own blood? unfortunately there are many unlucky people
in this circumstance, who have to pick new family, people who they can trust, people who will stand by them,
and treat them as anyone deserves. which goes against the saying "you can pick your friends but you can't pick
your family" but at the end of the day, 'Family' are the people who love you unconditionally and don't
intentionally make you unhappy or feel unworthy. they're the people you can call any time of the day and
know they will no matter what make time for you..these kinds of people...they, are your family!
The Importance of the Mother in Islam
Posted on May 14, 2012 by Reem (mother’s day in 2013 = 12

th

may 2013,sunday)

Yesterday, many parts of the world celebratedMother’s Day,
focusing on mothers and their contributions to their families. Since there is a negative stereotype of how Islam
views women, many people may not know that mothers specifically and parents in general are held in very
high esteem in the faith. There are verses in the Qur’an and hadith that emphasize the burdens that a mother
carries and the respect that should be accorded to her. In this post, I will focus on the importance of mothers in
Islam.
The verses of the Qur’an that address the mother emphasize the difficulties of pregnancy, labor, and
breastfeeding and the need to respect one’s mother. These verses many times mention parents in general but go
into detail in regard to the mother because she faces challenges that a father does not. Verse 15 from chapter 46
illustrates this point.
And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and
gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until,
when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for
Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You
will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the
Muslims.
This verse begins with a command for both parents, but goes into detail in regards to the mother and the
difficulties she endures. The command to treat parents with kindness means to treat them with respect under all
circumstances, to obey them unless it goes against an edict of the faith, and to care for them in old age as they
cared for you as a child.
How a Muslim should treat their parents, especially the mother, is further underscored in the hadith. There are
many instances that the Prophet Muhammad commanded believers to respect their mothers. Here are a few
examples:
A man came to the Prophet and said, „O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my
good companionship? The Prophet (PBUH) said: Your mother. The man said, „Then who?‟ The Prophet said:
Then your mother. The man further asked, „Then who?‟ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked
again, „Then who?‟ The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim)
A man once consulted the Prophet Muhammad about taking part in a military campaign. The Prophet asked
the man if his mother was still living. When told that she was alive, the Prophet said: “(Then) stay with her, for
Paradise is at her feet.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
On another occasion, the Prophet said: “God has forbidden for you to be undutiful to your mothers.” (Sahih
Al-Bukhari)
In the first hadith, the Prophet highlights the importance of the mother over the father by repeating “your
mother” three times and then saying “your father” once in response to the man’s question. The second hadith
illustrates the significance of the mother by placing caring for her over going to war to defend Islam. In other
words, caring for his mother is also a way for a man to serve God. By saying that entrance into paradise is
linked to caring for and respecting a mother, the Prophet accords them a great honor. In the last hadith, the
Prophet asserts that disobedience of mothers is a sin.
All the verses and hadith on mothers demonstrate the importance of this figure in Islam. They also show that
the mother is accorded a higher honor than even the father because of all the responsibilities she has towards
her child. The Prophet never saw his father because he died before his birth and he lost his mother when he
was six years old. Yet many hadith show that he understood the importance of one’s parents, especially the
mother. Many Muslims will say that Islam emphasizes the importance of the mother so much that Mother’s
Day is not one day a year but should be everyday.
Did you know how mothers are viewed in Islam? Does this position on mothers challenge the negative
stereotype of women in Islam? Why do you think that mothers are accorded so much respect in Islam? How do
other faith traditions view the figure of the mother? Please share your comments below.

Since there is a negative stereotype of how Islam views women, many people may not know that mothers specifically and parents in general are held in very high esteem in the faith. There are verses in the Qur’an and hadith that emphasize the burdens that a mother carries and the respect that should be accorded to her. In this post, I will focus on the importance of mothers in Islam. The verses of the Qur’an that address the mother emphasize the difficulties of pregnancy, labor, and breastfeeding and the need to respect one’s mother. These verses many times mention parents in general but go into detail in regard to the mother because she faces challenges that a father does not. Verse 15 from chapter 46 illustrates this point. And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims. This verse begins with a command for both parents, but goes into detail in regards to the mother and the difficulties she endures. The command to treat parents with kindness means to treat them with respect under all circumstances, to obey them unless it goes against an edict of the faith, and to care for them in old age as they cared for you as a child. How a Muslim should treat their parents, especially the mother, is further underscored in the hadith. There are many instances that the Prophet Muhammad commanded believers to respect their mothers. Here are a few examples: A man came to the Prophet and said, „O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet (PBUH) said: Your mother. The man said, „Then who?‟ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, „Then who?‟ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, „Then who?‟ The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim) A man once consulted the Prophet Muhammad about taking part in a military campaign. The Prophet asked the man if his mother was still living. When told that she was alive, the Prophet said: “(Then) stay with her, for Paradise is at her feet.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

On another occasion, the Prophet said: “God has forbidden for you to be undutiful to your mothers.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari) In the first hadith, the Prophet highlights the importance of the mother over the father by repeating “your mother” three times and then saying “your father” once in response to the man’s question. The second hadith illustrates the significance of the mother by placing caring for her over going to war to defend Islam. In other words, caring for his mother is also a way for a man to serve God. By saying that entrance into paradise is linked to caring for and respecting a mother, the Prophet accords them a great honor. In the last hadith, the Prophet asserts that disobedience of mothers is a sin. All the verses and hadith on mothers demonstrate the importance of this figure in Islam. They also show that the mother is accorded a higher honor than even the father because of all the responsibilities she has towards her child. The Prophet never saw his father because he died before his birth and he lost his mother when he was six years old. Yet many hadith show that he understood the importance of one’s parents, especially the mother. Many Muslims will say that Islam emphasizes the importance of the mother so much that Mother’s Day is not one day a year but should be everyday. Did you know how mothers are viewed in Islam? Does this position on mothers challenge the negative stereotype of women in Islam? Why do you think that mothers are accorded so much respect in Islam? How do other faith traditions view the figure of the mother? Please share your comments below. Share this:
