3. INTRODUCTION
This is a form of underground coal mining where a longwall of coal is mined in
a single slice (Typically 0.6m -1.0m thick).
Longwall panel is typically 3-4 km long and 250-400m wide.
As a cut or slice is taken along the length of the wall.
4. EQUIPMENTS
o Powered support system
o Shearer
o Armoured face conveyor
o Conveyor system
o Electricals & communications
7. ADVANTAGE OF LONG WALL MINING
o High recovery
o Lower operating cost
o Easier to supervise
o Increased safety
o Higher quantity of coal
o Suitable for thick seam
o Simple ventilation
o Better for deep seated mines
8. DISADVANTAGE OF LONGWALL MINING
o Small problem = Big production losses.
o Dust control difficult.
o Overloading conveyor system.
9. REASON FOR SLOW PROGRESS OF
LONGWALL IN INDIA.
o Long wall had to co-exist with the conventional mining in most
of the mines ,which caused management problem.
o Coal companies were sensitive to the failure of a few long wall
faces and were prepared to risk huge investments.
o Geological and geotechnical condition were more difficult then
expected.
o Problems in the maintenance of the equipment.
o Equipment sourced from many suppliers with no accountability.
10. PERSENT ACTION AND FUTURE
NEEDS.
o Spare parts of management.
o Workshops and overhauling facilities.
o Manpower development.
o Indigenisation.
o Monitoring of performance.
11. CONCLUSIONS.
o Mechanised longwall mining has emerged as the most
successful production technology in the global coal mining
scenario.
o Introduction of fully mechanised longwall technology was
made in China and India almost simultaneously.
