2. Start as we mean to go on.....
Can you explain the following 2 key sayings?
Tidal Volume
‘is the amount of air inspired and expired with
each normal breath at rest or during exercise’
Vital Capacity
‘is the greatest amount of air that can be
made to pass into and out of the lungs by the
most forceful inspiration and expiration’
4. Today’s learning objectives:
By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
Explain and understand how the respiratory
system works
Understand the immediate effects of exercise
on the respiratory system.
Understand the long term effects of exercise on
the respiratory system.
5. Immediate effects
Breathing quickens and deepens:
How efficient your breathing is effects how much oxygen
you can remove from the air.
If you can’t get the oxygen to your lungs then it does not
matter how fast your heart beats!
Oxygen debt
‘the extra oxygen consumed during recovery from a
period of strenuous physical activity, compared with
the amount which would usually have been consumed
over the same length of time at rest’
Anaerobic exercise!
6. Immediate effects
Breathing quickens and deepens:
Task 3 Page 9
See how your breathing rate changes
1. At rest
2. Moderate exercise
3. Strenuous exercise
Did oxygen debt occur???
7. Long term effects of exercise
What are the long term effects of exercise on the
respiratory system?
Complete Task 4 on page 9
With a partner you need to brainstorm the question
above.
8. Long term effects of exercise
What are the long term effects of exercise on the
respiratory system?
• Better delivery of oxygen to working muscles
(cope better with exercise)
• Carbon dioxide removed more efficiently
(cope with greater increase in CO2)
• Vital capacity is increased
(lungs become more efficient)
• Increase in number of alveoli
(more available for gaseous exchange)
• Increase in capillaries around alveoli
(more O2 into blood and muscles)
9. Smoking
How does smoking effect alveoli and gaseous
exchange?
Task 5 page 12
11. Today’s learning objectives:
By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
Explain and understand how the respiratory
system works
Understand the immediate effects of exercise
on the respiratory system.
Understand the long term effects of exercise on
the respiratory system.
13. Homework
Complete the following:
• Any missing notes from the lesson.
• Hwk 3 Page 11
• Revise for an end of unit test covering
units 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 next lesson
