The dangers of Green ICT compliance and Data Security Discussing the benefits that a Green ICT asset recovery strategy can bring to your organisation, before highlighting the potential dangers that can arise from environmentally irresponsible “recycling” by comparing the professional recycling industry to the “informal” sector. State of market Introduction
If our demands on the planet continue at the same rate, by the year 2030, we will need the equivalent of two planets to maintain our lifestyles - Living Planet Report - WWF “ ”
ICT is not green? ,[object Object],[object Object],“ ” ICT can reduce annual global emissions by 15% by 2020 and deliver energy efficiency savings to Global Business of over EUR 500 billion The Climate Group – Smart 2020 : Enabling the low carbon economy in the information age
Carbon Reducing Strategies of Business 55% 36% 9% Carbon Neutral Strategy Carbon Reduction Strategy No Carbon Reduction Strategy For average business measuring ICT impact on carbon – footprint has grown by 24% in last two years 54% 9% 37% Do not measure ICT impact on Carbon Measure ICT impact on Carbon Measure ICT impact and achieved reduction
ICT needs to be replaced By adopting best standards in energy efficient methodologies and technologies – a 56% reduction in energy spend could be achieved by 2011 ,[object Object],“ ”

  1. My name is Myles Pilkington and I have been working within the Electronics Recovery and Recycling industry for almost 8 years. I must however admit to being a jack of all trades, which is why my knowledge is also being backed up by some experts. Together we hope you give you an interesting and informative seminar.
  2. Simply put, my agenda for this session is to talk about the three key aspects of a green ICT asset recovery strategy.
  3. Living Planet Report - WWF
  4. Gartner – 2% The Climate Group – Smart 2020 : Enabling the low carbon economy in the information age Intellect – Case study – Greening the Public Sector

  9. The computer is one of the most resource intensive pieces of equipment. It requires over ten times it’s weight in fossil fuels for its manufacture, whereas a car or fridge requires a roughly equal amount. UNEP/GRID-Avendal 2008, French Eric Williams, Ruediger Kuehr, Copmuters and the Environment, Understanding and Managing their impact, 2004. Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition IBM Green IT Document
  10. Top Bullets - UNEP Bottom Graph – UK Environment Agency Figures
  11. Rare metal supplies – Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence Major Materials Shortfall – Environment Agency figures combined with some data based on Sims Recycling Solutions operations JOHN In July of this year, China, who produce 90% of the World’s supply of rare earth metals, announced they were cutting exports by 72%! Apparently their own production needs meant they could no longer cater for the demands of the rest of the world’s manufacturing industry. Major Materials Shortfall – based on information from Environment Agency Returns and Sims Recycling Solutions’ data
  12. Gold recovery – Umicore In 2008, the National Institute of Materials Science, a Japanese Government-affiliated research organization, announced that 6,800 tons of gold (the equivalent of 16% of the world’s total reserves) lie in used electronics in Japan. The reserves also comprise silver (22%), indium (62%), tin (11%), and other materials (5%).
  13. UNEP
  14. GOOD Magasine: E-Waste Talk about value recovered
  15. Amount shipped illegally – Green Peace, Poisoning the Poor, Electronic Waste in Ghana.
  16. Theoretical recovery rate – based on Sims Recycling Solutions’ knowledge of material content ratios within electronic waste, combined with the knowledge of the types of materials being chased.
  17. Material recovery rates, based on currently Sims Recycling Solutions processing abilities.
  18. Information gained from Umicore
  19. ISO - International Standards Organisation OHSAS - Occupational Health & Safety Advisory Services WAMITAB – Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board CoTC – Certificate of Technical Competence
  20. At the end of the day, we can talk about carbon footprint and we can talk about the horrors of recycling through the informal sectors of third world countries. But what really brings home to me the dangers of not recycling, is that without it... without recycling... a lot of the technology we now depend on, simply won’t be able to be built in the near future.
