  4. 4. Sentence V Phrase ? 4 Phrase is a group of words with no complete meaning like: •In the class. •During their drive. •At half past 1. •To the ground.
  5. 5. Sentence V Clause ? 5 A clause is the basic unit of grammar. A clause must contain a verb. •I’ve eaten. •The sale starts at 9 am. •I didn’t sleep well last night.
  6. 6. Sentence V Clause ? 6 A clause has a Subject and a predicate. Subject: • What the sentence is about, the topic of the sentence. Predicate • What is said about the subject.
  7. 7. Sentence V Clause ? 7 A sentence is a unit of grammar, must contain at least one main clause. • She spoke to me. (One Clause) • I looked at her and she smiled. (Two Clauses) In writing, a sentence typically begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop:

  10. 10. Simple Sentences 10 • Contain a subject and a verb and it expresses complete thought. Consists of only one independent clause: • “An independent clause (also called main clause) is called a simple sentence.” There is no dependent clause.
  11. 11. Simple Sentences 11 Examples. A. He laughed. B. She ate an apple. C. They are sleeping. D. I bought a book.
  12. 12. Compound Sentences 12 2 independent clauses with conjunctions. No dependent clause •“for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so”.Coordinating conjunctions:
  13. 13. Compound Sentences 13 Independent clauses can also be joined by a semicolon (;). A comma may or may not be used before the conjunction in compound sentence.
  14. 14. Compound Sentences 14 A. I like an apple but my brother likes a mango. B. I helped him and he became happy. C. He failed two times yet he is not disappointed. D. I asked him a question; he replied correctly.
  15. 15. Compound - Complex Sentences 15 One independent clause and at least one dependent clause joined by subordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions: • because, although, since, when, unless etc or relative pronoun (that, who, which etc).

  17. 17. Compound - Complex Sentences 17 •A. He is playing well although he is ill. •B. Although he is ill, he is playing well. If a complex sentence begins w ith an independent clause, a comma is not used.
  18. 18. Complex-Compound Sentences 18 • at least two independents and one or more dependent clauses. • It is also sometimes called compound-complex Sentence.: 1. He went to college and I went to a market where I bought a book. 2. I like Mathematics but my bother likes Biology because he wants to be a doctor.
