2. Superconductor
A superconductor can be any element or compound that will conduct electricity
without resistance below a certain temperature. Once an electric field is set in
motion it will flow forever in a close loop of superconducting material, which
makes it the closest thing to perpetual motion in nature.
4. Particle Accelerator
A particle accelerator is an apparatus that accelerates subatomic particles at
high velocity by the mans of an electric or electromagnetic field. These
particles are accelerated for research purposes or to produce X-rays and
Gamma rays.
5. Particle accelerators use electric fields to increase the
speed and energy of a beam of particles and
electromagnetic fields to focus and steer the beam.
These electromagnetic field use superconductors as
their conductive material for various reasons. The
beam of particles travels inside of a vacuum, it is
crucial that it is a vacuum so as the beam is kept in a
dust and air free area as to not have any obstructions.
Particles can be directed at fixed targets such as, thin
metal foil or collided together. Particle detectors are
in place so as to record and relay the particles and
radiation that are produced by the collision of the
particle beams and the desired target.

7. Superconductors and superconducting magnets are used in
particle accelerators for a multiple reason. The main one being
that superconductors have no resistance. As electromagnetic
fields are used to steer and focus the particle beam,
superconducting magnets are used in generating the
electromagnetic field. If a normal conductor was used it will
have very dire consequences as regular conductors have
resistance, whether it be little, it is still present. As resistance
is present the conduction of a current will generate heat and
as particle accelerators require a lot of electricity the heat
buildup can be exponential which not only has effects on the
particle beam but also can damage the accelerator itself and
the workers there. Superconductors, as they have no
resistance do not encounter this problem of heat buildup thus
not affecting the particle beam, the accelerator or the
workers.

9. A Better Understanding
Superconducting magnets are used in particle accelerators to increase their
efficiency and capability. By doing this it has helped further the research to a
better understandings of the working of the universe.
