'Don't get mugged by an insurer - use a solicitor' says bold
new advertising campaign by The Law Society
Three million people are injured in accidents each year, according to The Law Society and if
you believe that the accident wasn’t your fault and you could be owed compensation, The
Law Society is warning against saying ‘yes’ to the first compensation payment you’re
offered. This is the key message of their campaign launched in June.
Backing the campaign, David Green, Managing Partner at MTA Solicitors LLP, who also run
the LawStore at Intu Bromley (formerly The Glades) said, ‘There are lots of enticing offers
around that come from ‘Claims Management Companies’ or insurers, but be careful as they
might not offer you the best deal, if you think you are owed compensation. These
companies are effectively acting as middle men for your claim, so you are likely to get a
much better deal if you take advice directly from a Solicitor.”
Research from the Financial Services Authority which only became publically available
because of a freedom of information challenge, revealed personal injury claimants who turn
down an insurer's initial offer and take legal advice directly from a solicitor, get on average
three times more compensation.
Desmond Hudson, chief executive of the Law Society said:
“This campaign doesn’t pull any punches, but we need to make a clear message, see your
solicitor, don’t accept the insurers’ first offer and don’t deal with claims management
companies. Pursuing your claim with a solicitor will mean you will get what you are genuinely
entitled to.”
