3. 1) What is Jazz? Jazz is a music genre that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States from a confluence of African and European music traditions.

4. 2) The Origins of Jazz In 1808 the Atlantic slave trade had brought almost half a million. Africans to the United States. The slaves largely came from West Africa and brought strong tribal musical traditions with them. By the 1920’s African music had been sped up and played with different instruments it now became Jazz.

5. 3) Jazz in the 1920’s Prohibition in the United States banned the sale of alcoholic drinks, resulting in speakeasies which helped the role of Jazz. These meetings had dancers and musicians that would commonly play Jazz. Jazz became very popular during this time and after the prohibition was lifted it continued being the music of the era.

6. 4) Famous Musicians Some of the most famous musicians of Jazz were Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Bessie Smith. Louis was a trumpeter, Ellington was a composer, and Bessie was a singer.

7. 5) More Details on Louis Armstrong Born on August 4, 1901 in New Orleans US Louis played the trumpet at age thirteen and continued through out his whole life. In Armstrong’s professional career he was nicknamed Satchmo by his fellow musicians and fans. Louis Armstrong had three main co-musicians who were Joe “King” Oliver, Ella Fitzgerald, and Kid Ory. When Armstrong was 69 years old he died in Corona, Queens, New York.
