Personhood
Rights

   A right is an
  interest that a
 person has that
must be protected
e.g. a right to life
Rights

Others in the world must also
     protect that right

It has been argued that a
right is only appropriate for
certain beings i.e. a ‘person’
A ‘person’ is

Someone who is self-conscious
and is aware of themselves as
       existing over time

Someone who can engage in a
 purposeful sequence of acts
Someone who has the
 capacity to appreciate
   reasons for acting
   Someone who can
communicate with other
 persons using language
Someone who has the capacity to make
        moral judgements

      Someone who can reason

  Someone who can understand the
   requirements of the contract or
            agreement
Someone who has the ability to
perceive pain and feel emotion

  Someone who can be held
 accountable for their moral
 actions: know the difference
   between right and wrong
Can animals be
 said therefore
to be ‘persons’?
