  2. 2. <ul><li>Sybil Ludington is known as a “female Paul Revere”. Her contribution to the war was to help stop the advance of the British. </li></ul><ul><li>When her father Col. Ludington was told on April 26 th , 1777, that the British would attack Danbury, Connecticut, he knew they would soon attack New York. 16 year old Sybil volunteered to warn the troops and alert the countryside. She rode 40 miles in a rain storm in the middle of the night warning troops and families. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Mary Ludwig Hays is also known as Molly Pitcher. She found out her husband William Hays would fight in the Battle of Monmouth. She went with him. </li></ul><ul><li>She helped in the Battle of Monmouth by giving soldiers water. </li></ul><ul><li>She got her nickname “molly pitcher” because Molly was a nickname for women named Mary in that time and the soldiers would always say “Molly, Pitcher” when asking for water. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li> Deborah Sampson was the first American woman known to impersonate a man in order to fight in combat in a war. She first enlisted in the war on May 20 th , 1782, under the name Robert Shurtliff. She served for seventeen months and than was injured in battle and honorably discharged. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams who was the first Vice President and the second president of the United States. Abigail is mostly remembered for the letters she wrote to John that described the war home front and gave him the advice to sign the Declaration of Independence. </li></ul>
