Mountains:
- Mostly lies on a large
plateau.
B. Plains:
- Most of the plateaus
are covered by grassy
open areas.
C. Rivers:
- Okavango
River, Orange, River, Li
mpopo River.
D. Savanna and Desert:
- Open grasslands and
Namib and Kalahari
Deserts cover majority
of the region.
E. Tropical Forests:
- Some areas contain
lush forests that are
home to many types

Mountains:
- Mountains in the east
with escarpment of
steep face at the edge
of a plateau.
B. Plains:
- Home to
lions, leopards, elepha
nts, baboons, and
antelope.

- Okavango: flows out of
Angola and into
Botswana.

- Orange: flows over
many waterfalls before
reaching Atlantic.
- Limpopo: waterfalls and
other obstacles prevent
from sailing.
D. Savanna and Desert:
- Namib Desert: driest
area in the region.
Receives less than
one half inch of rain a
year.

- Kalahari Desert:
low, flat, sandy areas.
E. Tropical Forests:
- Exist in Madagascar.

hunter gatherers.
B. Shona:
- A Bantu group that built
an empire in the 1400s.
- Raised cattle and
traded gold.
C. Great Zimbabwe:
- Stone-walled town that
was capital. Great trading
center. Will decline only
100 years later.
D. Europeans:
- Many Europeans
explored Southern
Africa and some even
settled there, setting
up trading posts.

F. Dutch:
- First to settle in the
area. Set up trading
post near Cape of
Good Hope.
G. British:
- British fought wars
with Bantu groups.

Descendants of
Dutch, French, and
German settler in
South Africa.

- Boers: Afrikaner
farmers who were
forced north by the

  • 2. Do Now: Look at the pictures on the right. Answer the questions: 1) What do you see? 2) What does it mean? 3) How do you know?
  • 3. A. Plateaus and Mountains: - Mostly lies on a large plateau.
  • 4. B. Plains: - Most of the plateaus are covered by grassy open areas.
  • 5. C. Rivers: - Okavango River, Orange, River, Li mpopo River.
  • 6. D. Savanna and Desert: - Open grasslands and Namib and Kalahari Deserts cover majority of the region.
  • 7. E. Tropical Forests: - Some areas contain lush forests that are home to many types of animals.
  • 8. F. Natural Resources: - Timber, crops, gold, c oal, copper, iron.
  • 9. G. Social Issues: - High rates of infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, h unger, homelessness, and social injustice.
  • 10. 1) Look at the map on the following slide. 2) Get color pencils 3) Fill in your blank map. Label and color it in. 4) Make sure that each country is a different color and labeled properly.
  • 12. 1) Get out a blank sheet of paper. 2) Go to each map station. 3) Review the maps. 4) Answer the questions about each map at each station on your paper.

  • 15. A. Drakensberg Mountains: - Mountains in the east with escarpment of steep face at the edge of a plateau.
  • 16. B. Plains: - Home to lions, leopards, elepha nts, baboons, and antelope.
  • 17. C. Rivers: - Okavango: flows out of Angola and into Botswana. - Orange: flows over many waterfalls before reaching Atlantic. - Limpopo: waterfalls and other obstacles prevent from sailing.
  • 18. D. Savanna and Desert: - Namib Desert: driest area in the region. Receives less than one half inch of rain a year. - Kalahari Desert: low, flat, sandy areas.
  • 19. E. Tropical Forests: - Exist in Madagascar. Home to lemurs and lush vegetation.
  • 20. 1) Get out a sheet of paper. 2) Look at the physical maps of Southern Africa. 3) Answer the questions that go along with them.
  • 21. 1) Get into groups. 2) Separate, do not distract or talk to other groups. 3) Read your reading and fill in the matrix. 4) When all groups are finished one person will present and others will walk around and fill in matrix.

  • 24. A. Khoisan: - Earliest people in Southern Africa. Were hunter gatherers.
  • 25. B. Shona: - A Bantu group that built an empire in the 1400s. - Raised cattle and traded gold. C. Great Zimbabwe: - Stone-walled town that was capital. Great trading center. Will decline only 100 years later.
  • 26. D. Europeans: - Many Europeans explored Southern Africa and some even settled there, setting up trading posts.
  • 27. Skip to readings slide then come back.
  • 28. E. Portuguese: - First to explore Southern Africa.
  • 29. F. Dutch: - First to settle in the area. Set up trading post near Cape of Good Hope.
  • 30. G. British: - British fought wars with Bantu groups. - Captured slaves.
  • 31. H. Afrikaners and Boers: - Afrikaners: Descendants of Dutch, French, and German settler in South Africa. - Boers: Afrikaner farmers who were forced north by the

  • 38. C. Religion: - Europeans introduced Christianity and today most are Christian. D. Art: - Christian Art, ethnic designs, tapestries, st atues, beadwork.
  • 39. E. Government: - Republics with elected presidents. F. Resources and Industries: - Gold, platinum, chromi um, tourism.
  • 40. G. Independence: - Beginning in 1960s many former colonies gained independence. Some peacefully, others fought. - H. Apartheid: - Placed restrictions on hoe people could live, segregation.
  • 41. A. Poverty: - One of the most serious issues facing the region. - B. Droughts: - Destroy food and creates unemployment – people cannot escape poverty.
  • 42. C. Disease: - Many people HIV positive. Governments are working to stop spread. - D. Deforestation: - Madagascar facing serious deforestation. Namibia first country in world to include environmental protection in constitution.
