Through the Parent Voice in Education project, the Ministry of Education encourages parents to become involved in their child’s
education through a Parent Involvement Committee comprised of a majority of parents that is directly linked to the director of
education and trustees.
Purpose of the committee:
• support, encourage, and enhance meaningful parental involvement within schools and across the district, including outreach
to parents who find involvement more challenging
• seek out the advice and ideas of school councils, and other parents and partners as they plan and implement strategies to in-
volve more parents at the regional level
• work collaboratively with the school board
• develop strategies for enhancing parental engagement and outreach
• support student success
The Peel District School Board established a Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) in 2008. The committee reviews the boards'
plans for parent involvement as it relates to parent, family and community engagement, and to make suggestions to schools,
councils and the board regarding additional parent outreach initiatives.
Here are some PICs achievements:
• quot;Help Your Child Learnquot; workshop series in various languages
• Focus Groups with parents and administrators in various languages
• Working on a video and website to encourage volunteerism in schools
• quot;Get Involvedquot; section on www.peelschools.org
To learn more, visit the Ministry of Education website at www.edu.gov.on.ca and go to the “Parent” section or check out quot;Get
Involvedquot; in the Parents Boost Learning section of the Peel board website, www.peelschools.org.
Getting back and forth to school in the winter can pose safety concerns for children, especially those who travel by
bus.
The following tips will help make your child's school bus routine safe and comfortable.
• Allow extra time to get to the bus stop.
• Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late afternoon.
• Stand back from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice.
• Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces.
• Dress for the weather to ensure you stay warm.
• Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus.
• Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street.
• Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall and get hurt.
