  • Big honor preaching here – 1 st time: 2000 – Carl Dambman preaching, Kostya Lysakhov translating. Now we live in Dambman’s flat. And Kostya is an established elder. Theme of series “City on a Hill” is taken from the sermon on the mount in Mat 5, where Jesus told his disciples they were the light of the world and a city on a hill cannot be hidden. I live within walking distance of the highest point of Moscow. Does anyone know where that is? Tyopli Stan. A massive 254m above sea level. Well, when it comes to Moscow, unfortunately, we are not talking about a city on a hill, not topographically and not spiritually. A city on a hill cannot be hidden and that is Jesus’ point. As a Christian, and as the church, we are not meant to be hidden, but out in the open, shining to those around us. When a city on a hill is shining, it is beautiful and inspiring. Much like this city here. Santorini, Greece. I have been to the Greek islands and there are cities like this all over that are build on steep hills. Life in this city is amazing, but it is not easy. Many of these cities are too steep for cars to drive so you have to navigate narrow stairways from the market at the harbor to your home. It is hard work to live on a city on a hill. And that was the task the church of Thessalonians were up for as we shall soon see.

  • When I was a kid I learned how to play this game by watching my dad. He hardly taught me anything by words. It was all by action. Then, when I noticed he wasn’t as good as a golfer as I wanted to be, I started watching golfers on tv and on the course golf. I just imitated what they did. I started beating my dad when I turned 13. Poor dad.
  • This man is Bob Kurland. What do you think he is famous for? He was the first person to slam dunk in a basketball game. In 1945 when he started doing this, he was at first jeered by his peers because they thought it was unnecessary. Now, try to find a game that this isn’t going on. He revolutionized basketball. Without examples of people to pave the way, there will never be change in big ways. The Thessalonians made big changes. And they were examples of change.
  • I Want to return to one aspect of what the Thessalonians did that was so key. And I want to focus on that because it is probably THE key for all of us here today to not only having a good witness but to having the life God intended. Turning from idols is something that the modern day person just glosses over because we think it is something that only tribal or ancient people deal with. But we have idols just the same. As a matter of fact, every person is a worshiping machine. We are constant worshipers. So, if we aren’t worshiping the true God, that means that we are probably worshiping an idol.
  • Is that what you think of when you think of idols in Russia?
  • Maybe this?
  • How about this? Hitting closer to home maybe?
  • Or this?
  • Idols can be anything. Martin Luther once said Everything that your heart is grounded upon and hangs upon, I say, that has become your God. So, is it possible that we as believers still hold on to our idols? Someone posed to me that those things aren’t actually idols, but merely altars through which you worship your idol.
  • Someone posed to me that some things aren’t actually idols, but merely altars through which you worship your idol. For instance television. You aren’t seeking the television, but what it gives you. Entertainment, comfort. You are actually worshiping these things. And ultimately it is self-worship.
  • My pastor said this about idols. It sounds better in Engish, so I’ll say it and then translate it. So good things that our God gives us to enjoy like family, work and even ministry can become spoiled if we make them the focus and let them take God’s position. If we are obsessed with these things, it will spoil the intended joy that should come from them. Romans 1 says “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.” - Romans 1:25 So we flip the created order around and put creation ahead of Creator.
  • When we recognize that we have idols, we need to be honest with ourselves. When we try to share the gospel with people and yet hold on to idols, it doesn’t work. Why? Because we are trying to pass on something that we want to work for someone else, that isn’t working for us. It isn’t genuine and it will not be passed on effectively. In Ch. 2:3 Paul says he shared the gospel “does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive,”. But we deceive when we try to pass on to someone else something that isn’t working for us. When we hold on to idols, it robs us of the power of a changed life. It robs us of our witness that this works! So, we first expose the idol to the truth. The idol says, “I will satisfy you.” The truth says what the Thessalonians believed. That the gospel has power, through the Holy Spirit. Only He is worthy to be served because only He will satisfy. That our only hope is in His Son, because only He will raise us from the dead. Your idol wont save you. Only Jesus will. So we need to receive the word with joy as the Thessalonians did. It isn’t a one time act. We need to receive that message daily. We receive once for salvation, but daily for sanctification. We must daily expose our idols to the truth. It is the only way to rid ourselves of them. Say, “Idol, you don’t satisfy. I turn from you. Christ, only you satisfy, I turn to you.” When you do this, you put Christ in his rightful place back on the altar. But He doesn’t stay there long. You must do this often. It is easy to push Jesus off the altar and replace Him with your idol. We do it daily. So, we must daily expose the idol to the truth. And daily receive the Word back to the altar of our life.
  • We can see the likes of what the Thessalonians saw where the gospel spread throughout their region. If we are willing to turn from our idols and serve the living God. It’s what we are made for. It’s the only thing that gives us true satisfaction. And it will radically change your life.
