Internet trends have become Intranet trendsAs we know it - Social Tools are changing private & work lifePrivate networks allow you to hook in to a huge network of peopleShare your life, help answer questions and be informed what’s happening in the world – faster than ever. i.e. FacebookWork life – LinkedIn has replaced the business card, and gives access to Millions of contactsInternally – mobilize employees to build collective intelligence and reduce time to market.Externally - engage customers around products and brandsThis change happening across all companiesSocial business will change most human activities.

Networks have become more important that InformationAbility to connect with thousands in just a short timeInformation flows at great speedSpeed up execution and time to market by getting answers to questions immediatelyCommunities are becoming the normal way of communication.So we can say:The speed at which change happens is far more powerful when lead by the community than individually or with a small group of people. Less micro-management is needed as tasks are delegated to employees who engage the community to get help and give helpNot affected by organization structure. They survive organization change.In effect, departmental structure is becoming ‘virtually’ flattened.Social collaboration can explode if not managed. Vent frustration. Blessing in disguise.

Intranet Content has shiftedBalance has shifted – collaboration, communities and co-creation now main source of communication.It has shifted from being driven top-down to driven from inside.Each employee holds key knowledge, therefore intranets are changing focus from information publishing to interactive communication and knowledge sharing.Collaboration has become more important driving adoption of wikis and blogs.Documents are no longer primary source of information.People are gathering from charts and video, rather than text.Content is being reused from several sources as smaller fragments.We could say the the traditional CMS is dead.

  6. So what are the building blocks for a productive workforce?Base content- knowing what applies in the organization - “How it works every day”The content that describes how the organization works. Usually static or almost static content on CMS-generated pagesOrganization structure according to categorization (global-local) and/or segmentation (business unit, job role, geographic location).News - Get to know about changes -“What is different today”The content that describes “what is different today”. Information about new rules, changes in the way the organization works, System is down for maintenance in the afternoon. Exciting information about new products, services, quarterly results But the really important news is the “need to know” news, the information you need in order to “survive” your working day.Tools - The intranet as a tool time reducer - “Doing things on the Intranet”Every intranet also needs to have tools. Booking a meeting room, apply for leave, order things and do other simple, ordinary work day things. The employee should not feel that these things force you to leave the intranet and enter other systems. Furthermore, the intranet should be the “gate” to all other systems in the organizationThe intranet should offer links to all the tools that are not directly integrated.Collaboration - The intranet as a tool for work - “Contribute yourself”In order to be perceived as a modern intranet, there must also be collaboration tools integrated in the intranet. Blogs, forums, project rooms, areas for sharing documents, thoughts and links and so on. A modern intranet also should be able to show activity streams from other business systems and from outside, for example twitter hash tags. But most importantly the content should must be a mix of all kinds of content we have just talked about

It raises the attention of something important about a relevant topic and benefits the community.Multimedia SharingAllow the ability to share rich media across the company that can be embedded in other forms of media. Allows employees and not just corporate communication teams to share messages across the company to build collective engagement on key topicsFinding & Connecting PeopleTo find expertise across the company and connect with other colleagues they don’t know.Finding people is a fundamental enabler for communication. It enables access to competences, especially tacit knowledge.Conversations Allow for structured online discussions around specific topics in defined groups both public and private.Enables company wide dialog and feedback gathering. It builds collective intelligence and increases awareness of other activities in the company. Sharing of documentsAbility to work on regulated documents with a team of people without the need to send around different versions by email. Boost efficiency in the creation, review and completion of documents.Sharing of web contentTo allow teams to jointly create online contentEnables efficiency and productivity in creating up-to-date web content that requires input from a variety of knowledge workers.Ideation To share, rate and comment on ideas and innovation proposals across a whole community.Supports the capture and refinement of ideas and innovation.Activity StreamsAllow people to follow online activities from several sources and exchange messages and content with other parts of the network.Increases awareness of current topics by providing a feed to knowledge workers.

Their connection in the life-cycle of the social eco-system and their ability to contribute meaningful relevance is what separates those who are productive from those who are not.Those who are productive should be rewarded. Those who are not will soon find themselves redundant.So find and promote those silent workers who make the difference.“In communities it is less important who you are or what your job position is. The most that matters is what you share”
