Why studying music raises math scores. Musical and spatial processing centers in the brain are proximal or overlapping and hence  linked  not distinct . Authentic and comprehensive training in making music and reading music notation increases further association between music and math reasoning. Learning in and through music can catalyze cognitive skills and social-emotional development across disciplines.

Listening to calm music as facts are reviewed helps learners remember
Learning music enhances the architecture of the human brain. Learning to make music and read music notation causes LONG TERM improvements in the underlying neural circuitry of the brain. These brain enhancements occur in  non-auditory areas of the brain that are not exclusive to music processing.

Long term study of music causes  permanent   measurable   enhancements  in the physical structure of the brain.
Musicians have a larger corpus callosum. In musicians who started their training in early childhood, the corpus callosum is up to 15% larger. A professional musician's auditory cortex has 130% more gray matter than that of non-musicians.
The Corpus Callosum Your brain is divided in two half globes or hemispheres by the Longitudinal fissure. The two halves resemble the two halves of a walnut. At the base of the Longitudinal fissure a thick bundle of nerve fibers, the corpus callosum, connects the two halves. The callosum acts as a bridge that allows one hemisphere to call on the other to accomplish a task.

The Corpus Callosum links your right and left brain and communicates between them left brain right brain
Are you in your right mind? Nerve fibers cross the longitudinal fissure causing the left hemisphere to control  the right half of the body, and vice-versa,  EXCEPT in HEARING. Although the right and left hemispheres seem to be a mirror image of one another, there are important functional distinctions. In most people, for example, the areas that control speech are located in the left hemisphere, while areas that govern spatial perceptions reside in the right hemisphere.
