A second definition:what do we mean with mobile if we look at our talks today? “Mobile is a small computing or communications device that is easily portable and can be used in various environments/contexts.” So, what is not a mobile?
A second definition:what do we mean with mobile if we look at our talks today? “Mobile is a small computing or communications device that is easily portable and can be used in various environments/contexts.” So, what is not a mobile?
This is not a mobile, that’s for sure and we’re also not talking about iPads, Galaxy tablets, netbooks, etc…
A smartphone is extremely personal. We tend to use it even in the most intimate places. Raise your hand if you never used your smartphone on the toilet? I’m sure everybody also knows the strange feeling you get when you forgot your phone or when the battery is dead. We tend to feel uncomfortable. Even when somebody wants to borrow your phone, you feel a small resistance from inside . A second important factor:
Research has shown that 7 out of 10 users keep their phones at arms length while they are sleeping. And we always keep it on.
It has the unique quality of enabling us to do stuff “in the moment”. There are a lot of services that allow you to use this feature and “share” experiences in the moment. At a lot of times you could get better pictures or better movies afterwards, but the fact that we made it ourselves adds value to the memory…
Web is very good in people and things, where’as a mobile device is very good in places. You carry it around everywhere so context can be a very important factor to take into account when you think about a mobile strategy. However, you also need to really dig into this based on what type of application or website you’re planning to launch because…
A lot of times we hear people talking about context in a stereotype manner. Typical remarks are:A mobile user is always on the moveA mobile user does not have much timeA mobile user has fragmented attentionA mobile user is on a slow connectionResearch has shown that users use their mobile devices in other circumstances. Some figures:
93% use at home62% while watching television69% while shopping39% in the bathroom
When you are looking at a mobile stratgy it’s also very important to keep the bigger picture in mind. Chances are that your mobile application or website is not something that’s on it’s own. It will probably be part of a bigger experience that users have with your brand which runs across several platforms and devices. A user should have a feeling of recognition when he is in contact with any of your products. Aside from the design, there is also a technical side in this story. At this moment it happens all to often that when visiting a mobile site you get redirected to the normal website when clicking links or whatever. Your design can be as good as you want but when customers have these “broken” experiences, chances are small that they will tell their friends about you.
