Evaluation Question 5 How did you address and attract your audience?
Magazines need to stand out from the crowd. They are competing for eye space amongst hundreds of over magazines. If it doesn’t stand out, sales can be lost and the future of the magazine could be in jeopardy. Circulation and sales are key for a magazine to survive.
How did I attract my audience?
Being different Unlike most other magazines, I placed my masthead in a circle, so it gives the illusion of layers on the magazine. It also allows the masthead to be clearly seen, as it is not blended into the background. My consumer is different and this is why I’ve made it look differently. Black and White Most magazines make use of their colour printing advantages. It is cheaper to print in full colour than selective spot colour printing. I used 5 colours – purple, orange, grey, black and white (grey is a shade of black + white). To stand out, I used a mix of black and colour, which would make my purple masthead stand out. All about the typeface Typeface is crucial. I used ‘Ultra’ which has a drop shadow, which makes it stand out. It also has a retro cinematic feel, which would attract my style conscious consumer – (retro is in by the way). I’ve used slim, skinny fonts such as TodayShop to add a modern feel – again, for this reason.
Good positioning As magazines are stacked, and usually only the top of the magazine can be seen, I have placed a cover-line at the top of the magazine, so it can be seen when stacked. Use of a gradient Although perhaps not an obvious one, but I have used a gradient on the main cover-line. This is to draw attention to it – as it is the main article. Magazines can be spend hundreds of thousands, if not millions for an exclusive, so ensuring it stands out is important. The magazine needs to sell and make money. It needs to be profitable.

All about images Consumers, especially teenagers who are scientifically proven to have a lower attention span, are less likely to want to seek out what to look for. Pictures are often thought as a pre-school thing, but they are a good way to attract attention and an easy way for the reader to locate the required content. They also look good. Being structured I have structured my contents page by order of importance/popularity. The main article at the top is from the homepage feature. The ‘main articles’ also have photographs linking to pages, which will attract my teenage consumer.
