Speaker bios:
Served on lots of VLA, ALA, and ALA round table/division committees. Have also appointed people to committees as NMRT VP
Think-pair-share: why are you interested in getting involved on committees?
Grow your career
Hired at CCPL because of committee work/association involvement
High-profile ACRL/other committees
The best way to create change
Use fresh-out-of-grad-school enthusiasm!
Pass out sticky notes
Nominating committees: learn the ins and outs of how to get elected into an office
Grant committees: sort of the same thing—learn how to get awarded scholarships, like for conferences
Book award committees: really competitive to get on the big-name ones like Carnegie; have to read dozens or hundreds of books!
Ask: any other committee types you’ve heard about/worked on/interested in?
workloads vary by committee
you can ask around in advance of volunteering to figure out what the workload will be and decide whether to pursue
don’t be afraid to say yes to things even if they’re not 100% your interest; when you’re beginning to build your resume, you can’t be too picky
do: contact your committee chair
don’t think you’re going to bother them!
better to keep them in the loop to prevent possible problems
don’t: sign up for a committee and then disappear
People will remember this and you could be blackballed in the future from serving on other committees/running for office.
do: resign from the committee
No one will hold it against you, though they will if you just stop answering emails.
do: go above and beyond (if you’re interested and your workload allows!)
by volunteering to lead a subcommittee’s work, take on a particularly onerous task, etc.
this will endear you to your committee chair and put you in a really good position to be placed in a leadership position the following year
can’t figure out how to join? reach out to committee member/chair and ask

NMRT offices – most people running for ALA NMRT office this year are people I knew were good chairs last year
