Why CHLS Important?

• over 80% of Korean students attend higher education (Song & Kim, 2009)
• competition for entrance into the best-ranked colleges and universities
requires that parents purchase additional tutoring beyond formal schooling

• the CHLS provides supplemental learning opportunities to reduce the cost
of this private tutoring and eliminate the gap between regions and classes

• in 2008, the CHLS was used by 3.09 million students (an increase of 6.4%),
with an 86% increase in the number of classes and a 100% increase in the
number of students per class (Korean Education and Research Information
Service, 2009)

• presently, there are approximately 10,000 teachers working as cyber tutors;
who perform pedagogical, administrative, social and technical roles for the
these students (Bae, Han, Lee & Lee, 2008)

Why CHLS Important? • over 80% of Korean students attend higher education (Song & Kim, 2009) • competition for entrance into the best-ranked colleges and universities requires that parents purchase additional tutoring beyond formal schooling • the CHLS provides supplemental learning opportunities to reduce the cost of this private tutoring and eliminate the gap between regions and classes • in 2008, the CHLS was used by 3.09 million students (an increase of 6.4%), with an 86% increase in the number of classes and a 100% increase in the number of students per class (Korean Education and Research Information Service, 2009) • presently, there are approximately 10,000 teachers working as cyber tutors; who perform pedagogical, administrative, social and technical roles for the these students (Bae, Han, Lee & Lee, 2008)
