  1. 1. Analyzing frontpages on Bin Laden, the Americans and the world - a media literacy exercise
  2. 2. Previous remarks <ul><li>Look closely at the following slides reproducing frontpages of USA newspapers, concerning  the operation that led to the death of Osama Bin Laden, in a compound in Pakistan, on May 1, 2011. </li></ul><ul><li>It is suggested that the following exercises be adapted to the context in which they are made​as well as to the aimed goals. </li></ul><ul><li>(Slides 8-12 refer to newspapers of Monday, May 2, and the remaining  to newspapers of Tuesday, May, 3). </li></ul>
  3. 3. Description <ul><li>1. Reconstruct what happened on Sunday, May 1, connected with this event.  </li></ul><ul><li>Which sources to consult?  </li></ul><ul><li>What is the nature of these sources? </li></ul>
  4. 4. Contextualization <ul><li>2. Contextualize what happened:  </li></ul><ul><li>historical background, </li></ul><ul><li>September 11th,  </li></ul><ul><li>Why the operation had elapsed in Pakistan. </li></ul><ul><li>Understand the role of this country and the USA in this event. </li></ul>

Analysis 1 <ul><li>3. Analysis of the frontpages: a) Observe each one of the slides and write down all the impressions and questions that have arisen. b) Characterize the styles of front pages observed (take into account the design, the headlines’ size, the colors, photos, etc.). Establish affinity groups. </li></ul>

Analysis 2 <ul><li>C) Distinguish the first day headlines from those of the second day; </li></ul><ul><li>D) Compare slide 11 with slide 12; </li></ul><ul><li>E) Slide 14 explains “How they got him” and slide 15 “How we got him”. How do you interpret this different use of pronouns? </li></ul>
