Meet the New Workforce

  1. Hi! My name is Mitchell Hislop
  2. I go by Mitch
  3. And I’m a millennial
  4. I will be 20 in exactly one week
  5. There is proof of that here, *click* and proof that I am not photogenic
  6. I’m a student
  7. At Hamline University
  8. I work at
  9. fahrenheight360
  10. And I like to have fun. In my down time I
  11. Am a student congress representative
  12. A former professional rock climber
  13. And a former camp counsloer
  14. Now, I did this all at the same time
  15. I am never without either my phone or planner,
  16. And I am really sad I left so much open time this week (the white space)
  17. To me, Work=Life
  18. And life=work
  19. I need work to be challenging
  20. engaging
  21. And fast paced
  22. Take my job at fahrenheight360
  23. Where I am a “marketing assistant”
  24. Which means I do just about anything
  25. For instance, last week I did
  26. Market research,
  27. Some networking,
  28. Some pr planning
  29. A little campus marketing,
  30. And coffee making
  31. Now, I have been doing this since I was very old. In my last year of high school, I
  32. Received my eagle scout award,
  33. Planned and carried out a 2wk trip to hawaii for 20 people
  34. Compeated nationwide in climbing
  35. Was the captian of our school mock trial team
  36. Attended MN boys state
  37. And worked
  38. Now, you may wonder why my plate is so full. The short answer is
  39. That one day I will be president, but the long answer is
  40. Because I’m a millennial and its just how we work. So the real questions is
  41. Are you millennial ready. Well, hopefully myself and my partner in crime
  42. TereseCorey Blanck will help you answer that question.
  43. Terese is a family oriented outdoorsy person, who
  44. Loves to travel. She has been to all over the world and even lived in Japan, and she is also a
  45. As self-described connector of people has her
  46. Masters in education, and is a life long learner with credits toward her Doctorate at Columbia University
  47. Terese is an entrepreneur, who wrote two books for the Millennial Generation and their parents, titled,
  48. The college to career roadmap.
  49. She also speaks all over the nation about the topic of millennials in the workplace
  50. In her downtime, which she loves, terese is
  51. And avid runner, and also
  52. A musician, who plays 4 instruments, and even wrote a lullaby for her daughter
  53. Now, terese is constantly asking questions, usually about the bigger things in life
  54. Back when she was in school, Terese was tossed out of her religion class for asking too many questions
  55. Now, I could sit here and bore you to death with the reasons you should listen to her,
  56. And talk up all her credentials, like the fact that
  57. she has been working with colleges, students, and parents for the last 20 plus years, or that
  58. Or that 12 of those years were on college campuses, or that the other twelve were in the private sector of business ,
  59. I think that it is more important how she is able to relate to my generation.
  60. When terese went to college, her parents dropped her off, and told her to call Sundays after 11. That year, she only went home on weekends, making her independent, like much of my generation. Her experience is almost exactly like what mine was last fall when I started college.
  61. (T starts here) The similarities don’t end here. Mitch and I are also very alike when it comes to what motivates us in the workplace. HOWEVER< …you just saw a Millennial presentation and now you will see a cusper …..Gen X//Boomer presentation.
  62. All of the past generations listed challenging and stimulating work as their #1 motivation. Gen Y must be different…
