▪ Too much, too soon and too long
▪ Not appropriate for age or interests and talents
▪ Adult’s needs more than the child’s
▪ Disproportionate amount of family resources

▪ I feel sad and angry when I don’t get my way or
don’t get what I want.
▪ I often feel disappointed in others, let down by
them, the more I give the more I expect.
▪ I am so far in debt I can’t see the light of day.
▪ I am overweight, discontent, overdo, and still feel
empty.

extrinsic goals:
1. Wealth (to make the most money/wealth and
to own expensive possessions)
2. Fame (to be famous and admired by many
people)
3. Image (to have people comment on how
attractive and stylish they are

overindulged children in adulthood are
intrinsic goals:
1.Meaningful relationships (to share life with
someone they love in a committed relationship)
2.Personal growth (to learn new things and have a

betterment of society and to help others without
anything in return)

WHY PARENTS OVERINDULGE
▪ Often hear that it is because of affluence, or
parents give what they didn’t have...
– while studies indicate that overindulging can happen at
any income level
▪ Grandparents/others can overindulge, too
▪ Overindulgence comes from a good heart!
*All parents overindulge. It’s about balance and the unintended outcomes.
