With respect to my academic interest, this research as equipped me with the
ability to properly conduct a research. It has also helped me to become a
better speech organizer and has helped to eliminate my fair of public
speaking. The theme child Abuse is also frequently explored.
Child Abuse relates to my career path because I want to be a social worker.

9. PREFACE
The narrative piece “NO DADDY” is about a young teenage girl who lives with
her mother and step-father. The mother and the young teenager Mikayla lives in
fear of the step-father, young Mikayla gives up hope on life when she couldn’t
manage the sexual and physical abuse anymore, because she couldn’t tell anyone
what was happening to her at home. The mother would continuously tell her to
keep quiet about the situation because of the fear she has of that one man. Young
Mikayla took her life so she could be free of all the abuse and drama at home.
I wrote this story to reflect the life’s of many teenagers in and around Jamaica.
This story shows the causes and effects of incest (Father to daughter). This story
also encourage teens to report to the cops if they think that they could be abuse, if
they are been abuse and if they think anyone is been abuse.
In getting this story across to the public, I would recommend the internet
(Facebook). This is one of the most popular form of social media and people of all
different races, society and background uses this form of media. This media is
suitable to get the information across because it is the most widely used and
everyone would get an equal chance to view the story in order for the society at
large to view it a Facebook page would have to be create.
10. REFLECTIVE PIECE
FINALLY FREE!!
“No! no! daddy no! mi na dweet agen!” 13 year old Mikayla screamed.
She had just gotten up to go into the kitchen for a glass of water, while fetching the
water her step-father came staggering through the door. She looked at the wall
clock, it was after midnight. She turned her attention back to what she was doing,
as she poured the water in the cup and was about to take a drink, a hand on her
shoulder startled her causing the glass to hatter spilling it contents on the floor.
“luk way uh duh!” she spun around and gave him an angry stare.
“a mi yah look Pan so?” his words slurred and he wreaked of alcohol. She raised
her hand to her nose in an effort to avoid the putrid scent. Taking her gesture as a
sign of disrespect, he smacked her across her left cheek. Her eyes widened in
horror as her hands trace the spot on her cheek. She turned and tried to run from
him but like a lion catching his prey he pounced on her causing her to fall face
down on the floor splitting her lips. He turned her on her back and punched her in
the face “doh run fram mi agen!” he said while hitting her continually.
“no! no! daddy no! mi na dweet agen!” 13 year old Mikayla screamed.
He continued like this for what seemed like hours but it was only about 5 minutes.
He flipped her on her stomach and yanked off her shorts and underwear. She tried
to get away but it was useless, he already on her forcing onto her. She cried out in
11. pain “no! stop! stop! Please!” but he only laughed sadistically and continued
thrusting into her. After a while he erupted in her and got up with an evil grin.
“stop gwan like yuh nuh love it again” with that he left.
Mikayla stayed there limp for a minute longer. When she got up to go to her room
everything hurt, she was passing her parents room when she heard them fighting.
She knew her mother had heard her screams but was too scared to do anything.
The next morning she woke up and felt extremely sore, she got ready early and left
for school. When she got there she saw her best friend Tash “kayla! A wa happen
to yuh?” she asked as she saw her friend. Mikayla started crying instantly, she
thought of a lie to tell Tash.
“yesideh when mi a go home some bwai gang mi and beat mi.” she cried. Tash
hugged her and let her cry, the bell rung and they were heading to class.
“Tash mi head a hat mi, yuh can falla mi go nurse?”
“yeah man”
as they were about to go into the nurse office Mikayla fainted. Tash banged the
office door in panic, “nurse Campbell! Nurse Campbell”
The nurse opened the door and saw Mikayla. She helped tash put her on the bed
“what happened?” she asked
“she said that a group of boys attack her yesterday.” Tash replied while Nurse
Campbell was checking on Mikayla. She noticed a swelling on her head “I think
we should get her to a doctor” they took her to the nearest hospital and called her
mother. When her mother arrived Mikayla had already woken up and Tash and
Nurse Campbell had already left.
“yuh tell dem wa happen to yuh?” her mother asked. Mikayla hissed her teeth and
rolling her eyes, she just stared at her with anger, hurt and disbelief.
“Mek sure yuh no seh nuttin enuh!” her mother continued. Mikayla was about to
reply when the doctor came in.
“Good afternoon, I’m doctor Grey. You must be her mother?” he asked. She shook
her head.
“Your daughter has a mild concussion and a few fractured ribs.” Her mother
feigned a sob.
“Ma’am there’s one more thing.” He paused “she’s 3weeks pregnant” this time
Mikayla cried. A few hours later she was released. The doctor prescribed some
medication that would help with the pain and make her sleep. They got the
medication and went home.
12. Her mother told her stepfather she was pregnant. He got really angry and stormed
into her room “slut! Yuh go breed fi ada man!” he hit her in the face, she kept
quiet.”ansa mi!” she still didn’t answer.
That night he beat her until she was bloody. When he was finished Mikayla laid in
a pool of her own blood. She didn’t want to be a mother. She didn’t want to be the
mother of his baby.
so she made a decision, she went into the bathroom with her pills. She took them
all. She knew they wouldn’t find her in time to save her. As darkness over took her
she smiled. She was happy as death crept in. She was finally free.
13. ANALYSIS
This section will analyze the story and the linguistic features used within the story.
The two linguistic features used are:
Communicative Behavior
Register
Communicative behavior refers to gesture or specific body language that conveys a
particular attitude or feelings. For instance in the story where Mikayla started to
hiss her teeth and the rolling of her eyes which she couldn’t control. The reason
she hiss her teeth was because she felt angry and disbelief in her mother.
Another instance was when Mikayla collapse and Tash got scared and start to
shout out for the nurse and beat on her door.
Register is the form of a language in which one may choose to speak where ‘form’
refers to ranges of formality and informality. Formal (Standard English) and
informal (creole).
Instances of this in the story was when Mikayla spoke to her friend Tash in creole
because she was speaking to her peer without the presence of a member in the
upper class. Also they have a close relationship and being that it’s an informal
situation.
“kayla! A wa happen to yuh?” Tash said
“yesideh when mi a go home some bwai gang mi and beat mi.” said Mikayla
And when the good voice started to talk to Tash she spoke in Standard English.
“She said that a group of boys attacked her yesterday.”
The other instance was when the doctor was speaking to Mikayla mother because
he wanted to make a good impression and it is required in his occupation
“Good afternoon, I’m Doctor Grey. You must be her mother?”
The other instance is that Mikayla was talking in creole.
“no! no! daddy no! mi na dweet agen!” when her father was abusing her.
