  3. Vanni is halfIrish, half Indian. She loves to write. When she speaks, she’s very confident. She is very skilled in the art of insulting people and is the only person to have ever stood up to Mr. Locheed. She is in love with Jake. You can’t say: “My name is Vanni,” “I’m half Irish, half Indian,” “I like to write,” “I like Jake, “My nose is huge” etc.
  4. Jake Blanchard:The main character of the novel, Jake has a true passion for screenwriting. Since he works for his father, who is a carpenter, he is skilled in woodworking. Sometimes he can be shy, especially around Alba - who he has a crush on. He can be self-conscious about how others see him, but he is very comfortable with his friends Instant and Vanni. You can’t say: “My name is Jake,” “Mr. and Mrs. Blanchard are my parents,” “I want to be a screenwriter,” “I love Alba” etc.
  5. Instant:Instant is Jake’s best friend. In school, he is considered intelligent because he can answer questions in an instant. This is due to his eidetic (or photographic) memory, which means he can memorize anything. However, he doesn’t always understand the things he memorizes. He is a musician at the arts school and plays tenor saxophone. You can’t say: “My name is Instant,” “I am Jake’s friend,” “I have a photographic memory” etc.
  6. Mr. Cyrus Blanchard:  He is Jake’s dad as well as a carpenter. He owns his own woodworking business and wanted Jake to join in as well. During the story, he gets a heart-attack and is sent to the hospital. Mr. Blanchard is a strong person who wants the best for Jake.  You can’t say: “I am Jake’s dad”, “My name is Mr. Blanchard” etc . . .
  7. Romeo and Juliet:  This is one of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare.   15. Alba was the girl that Jake crushed on for most of the story. She is described as one of the beautiful, popular girls with strawberry-blonde hair. At the beginning, Alba really liked Chad and dated him as well. She applied to the arts school as an actress and played Juliet in the play, Romeo and Juliet.  You can’t say: “My name is Alba”, “I like to act”, “Jake likes me” etc . . . .
