observed on July 22 (22/7),

common approximation of π.
Pi Day was organized by Larry
Shaw at the San Francisco
Exploratorium (a museum of
science, technology, and arts).

approximations for pi were
obtained in a number of
different ways. For example,
in ancient Babylon, rope
stretchers marking the
locations of buildings and
boundaries estimated pi to
be 258 = 3.125.
