RICHARD AYOADERichard Ayoade is a British Comedian and Actor who is involved with the making of a variety of music
videos for mostly Indie Rock bands like Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend and Kasabian. Since his
early music video work, he has gone on to direct and star in big production films. His experience with
music directing had allowed him to utilise contacts for his films, like Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner being
able to write the soundtrack for Ayoade’s film ‘Submarine’. He was also able to direct the DVD for the
Arctic Monkeys’ ‘At the Apollo’ live set.
•Arctic Monkeys: "Fluorescent Adolescent", "Crying Lightning" and "Cornerstone“
• Super Furry Animals: "Run Away“
•the Last Shadow Puppets: "Standing Next to Me" and "My Mistakes Were Made For You“
•Vampire Weekend: "Oxford Comma" and "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”
•Kasabian: "Vlad the Impaler"
•Yeah Yeah Yeahs: "Heads Will Roll“
The artists tend to use live performances and narrate the story behind the video. He has been known
to use extreme special effects, like in the ‘Crying Lightning’ video for Arctic Monkeys but also simplistic
styles, like in ‘Oxford Comma’ by Vampire Weekend. Ayoade commonly uses panning shots of static
subjects, so the camera will move instead of the artist. He is particularly interesting for his wide range
of effective techniques.
He won best video in the 2009 NME awards for ‘My Mistakes Were Made for You’ by The Last
