5. Origin of Tourism:
• Tourism is a product of modern social
arrangements, beginning in western Europe in the
17th century, although it has antecedents in
Classical antiquity.
• Earlier, travel outside a person's local area for
leisure was largely confined to wealthy classes.
(For example, Roman Republic and Ancient
China).
6. Evolution of Tourism:
• By the Middle Ages, Christianity, Buddhism,
and Islam had traditions of pilgrimage that
motivated even the lower classes to undertake
distant journeys.

known as the Grand Tour, which was a

• Tourism is vital for many countries, due to the
income generated by the consumption of goods and
services by tourists, the taxes levied on businesses

tourist destination, and support the development of

9. Tourism In Pakistan
• Pakistan's tourism industry was in its heyday during the
1970s when the country received unprecedented amounts
of foreign tourists.
• The main destinations of choice for these tourists were the
Khyber Pass, Peshawar, Karachi, Lahore, Swat and
Rawalpindi.
• The country's attraction range from the ruin of civilisation
such as Mohenjo-daro, Harappa and Taxila, to the
Himalayan hill stations, which attract those interested in
winter sports.

and tourism to Pakistan's GDP in 2015 was US$
328.3 million, constituting 2.8% of the total GDP.

Promote Tourism:

International Tourism Expo 2017 for the promotion of
tourism.
• On the directives of Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Pervez Khattak a number of news projects to promote
tourism in the province are in the pipeline.
• These include a modern ferry services on River Sindh and
River Kabul at Nowshera, Khair Abad, Kund, Dera Ismail
Khan and other places
