  1. 1. The Hero’s Journey Anna McCraith, Natasha Walsh, John Hay, Matthew Hamill
  2. 2. Refusal of the Call This method helps build the heroes journey and motivation further. Luke Skywalker Refuses Ben Kenobi’s advice of becoming the new Jedi era. Luke then lists his reasons of why he cannot take this burden, showing what our hero has to lose, the stakes at hand. Ben Kenobi warns Luke of returning to his relatives showing the aspects of threat and danger toward our hero. Once returning to find the remains of his loved ones Lukes words are ‘there is nothing here for me anymore’. This symbolising the acceptance of his role. The journey begins as Luke asks Kenobi can he still train and travel with him. This symbolising Luke Crossing the Threshold Beginning his path. Without the Refusal Luke’s Journey would not have the meaning it does once he accepts. The motives are more vengeful, not heroic.
  3. 3. Refusal of the Call 1. Avoidance 2. Excuses 3. Persistent Refusal Leads to Tragedy 4. Conflicting Calls 5. Positive refusals 6. Willing Heroes 7. Threshold guardians 8. The Secret Door
  4. 4. Heroes and Mentors Sources of Wisdom Arya and Syrio - Game of Thrones Bilbo and Gandalf - Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit Spyro and Ignitus - The Legend of Spyro Luke Skywalker and Yoda - Star Wars Harry and Dumbledore - Harry Potter
  5. 5. Mentors in Folklore and Myth Chiron: A Prototype Unlike most centaurs in Greek mythology, Chiron was kind, calm and respected. He was the teacher of many Greek heroes like Hercules, Jason, Perseus and Theseus. He was highly revered among the gods as a teacher and a tutor as well as a respectable father-figure as he had to raise many of the young heroes from infancy. Chiron is seen as the archetypal Mentor as he helped guide the heroes of Greek mythology through life and helped prepare them for any danger they would face. When he died Zeus rewarded him with the highest honour he could bestow, he transformed him into the zodiac Sagittarius. In Greek mythology, the goddess Athena took the form of Mentor, the son of Hercules, encourage Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, to find his father who was fighting in the Trojan War. - The Odyssey of Homer
  6. 6. Avoiding Mentor Cliches Hannibal Lecter - Silence of the Lambs Fagin - Oliver and Company
  7. 7. Misdirection Mentor-Hero Conflicts Thorin Oakenshield and the Dragon sickness - The Hobbit Rodney Copperbottom and Mr Bigweld - Robots Alfred leaving Bruce Wayne’s Crusade - The Dark Knight Rises
  8. 8. Mentor-driven Stories Mentors as evolved Hero Ender and Colonel Graff - Enders Game Fletcher and Andrew - Whiplash Gandalf The Grey to Gandalf the White - The Lord of the Rings Obi Wan Kenobi - Star Wars
  9. 9. Threshold Guardians Cerberus - Greek Mythology Fluffy - Harry Potter Zazu - The Lion King
  10. 10. The Crossing Rough Landing Morpheus makes Neo decide on which pill to take - The Matrix Peter Denying Jesus 3 times - Mark, 14:66

Notas do Editor

  • 1: The Lion King - Simba says he isn’t the true king because he wants to avoid conflict and remain in his comfortable carefree life. 2. Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars - The Doctor refuses to help the doomed colonists on the Martian base because he doesn’t want to interfere with “destiny” 3. Hannibal - Will Graham refuses to join Hannibal and run away together so Hannibal stabs Will, kills his surrogate daughter and almost kills all his friends. 4. The Matrix Reloaded - that really dumb scene where Neo has to choose between saving Trinity or saving Zion. 5. How To Train Your Dragon - Not killing Toothless leads to the friendship that comes to define the fate of Berk. 6. Kill Bill - she doesn’t hesitate in killing all her old acquaintances and working her way up to Bill 7. Sherlock - Mycroft constantly tries to stop Sherlock from getting involved in issues that are far bigger than himself. 8. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe - Lucy enters the wardrobe that she was forbidden to enter.
  • Mentors can sometimes disappoint the heros who have admired them, e.g- in the animated movie ‘Robots’ Rodney Copperbottom travels to Robot City so he can meet Mr Bigweld, the robot he idolised for so many years of his life. But the meeting leads to disappointment when Rodney realises Bigweld has given up on his beliefs in helping to make the world a better place.
Within V for vendetta Evey has been taken under V’s wing against her will and into his threshold out of reach from the world. In teaching Evey our mentor ‘V’ uses drastic measures to show her his view and own story of how he came to be on this crusade to set the people free from government reign.
  • Enders Game- notes :One boy with the tactical advantage of war. His mentor through his journey of battle school is against him the entire way.
Driving him, placing him in dysfunctioning teams and surrounding him with distractions. Without the mentor driving Ender and the plot, our hero would not amount to his full potential or strive for it.
The father figure vibe surrounding this relationship helps with the mentors reasoning and care for Ender but driven by his own gain and welfare.
Whiplash 2014 - A drum teacher has the reputation of turning no name drummers to high famed stars. He pushes his students in ways that are unorthodox or questionable at least. Harsh conditions grow the best fruit and with this teacher if you can grow within this learning environment you will thrive, as our seeker Fletcher finds when he enrolls. Without this relationship and drastic actions from the mentor we would not see our seeker or plot evolve.
  • Threshold Guardians : As the hero approaches the threshold in which they would like to enter through, they’re most likely to encounter a threshold guardian which tests the character from continuing their quest. In Greek Mythology a 3 headed dog named Cerberus which guarded the door to the underworld in which the hero must pass this objective and continue their journey, much like the 3 headed dog in Harry Potter which guards the trapdoor to the Philosophers Stone.
  • The road to crossing the threshold lies in the decision to do right or wrong. The motives are what drive our decision, our past influences and beliefs either intact or shattered. These motives define that decision into being a transition of enlightenment or a transformation into a lost soul or a shadow of one's former self.
In the matrix - The motivation for good can also be rough and not so light but again in the end we hope as an audience the training of the hero is enough for the task and also for them to rise to greater heights.
If not though the decision can leave a journey forgotten and the hero in disbelief of everything a hero once stood for, this can leave them with nothing.
Like in the bible when Peter Denied Jesus 3 times. He his mentor told him this would occur only to have him still disbelieving. The point of Crossing the threshold had not been fulfilled, the journey not yet started. A very drastic example of a rougher landing as some heroes do deny only to be redeemed within the Journey and serve maybe a higher purpose.
