Passion Projects

We invite you to join us in a project bringing passion into the classroom! Yes, that's right: passion! We learn
about, teach others, and talk - about that for which we have a passion. Why not cultivate such passion in our
students?
What passions do you already have?

•
•
•

How does that passion inspire you when things are tough?
In what ways can your passion inspire others?
Can you be inspired to learn more about another's passion?

Janet Barnstable, Global Virtual Classroom Program Manager & HLW / Louise Morgan, Global Classroom Project Management Team & HLW / Steve Sherman, LivingMaths Founder & HLW /
Katherine Zublatnik, Founder of HLW Skypers / Lorraine Leo, K-8 educator,, HLW / Andrew Ezzell, Founder and President of Give Something Back International
●

Students will work together as teams to complete the
GeoGuesser Challenge using map skills and geography skills.

●

All participants will receive certificates; highest winners will
receive special award certificates. So even if you know others
have a higher score, participate!

Reinhard Marx, Germany, HLW
Janet Barnstable, Global Virtual Classroom Program Manager
Mystery Location / Mystery Skype
•
•

Students will use map skills to find the location of the mystery classroom

Students will use communication and critical thinking skills to ask questions
to help them find the mystery location.

•

Classes communicate with other classrooms via Skype or Google+
Hangouts.

•

Students will learn to respect and appreciate the cultures and customs of
others.

•

Students will be able to see the differences and similarities between

themselves and others around the world.

HLW Skypers: Janet Barnstable, David Karnoscak, Betsey Dixon, Armando Vezza, Louise Morgan

The Global Mock Newbery
Where Kid‟s Choice Counts!

Why? „cause
talking about

bonds!

Plus, it
encourages
reading and
writing,
because it‟s
social and
purposeful.

•

Connect with other classrooms in different states and
countries using the Edmodo social learning platform
Engage in discussions about hobbies, local area,

Global Writing Workshop

The goal of this project is to encourage and actively engage students in the writing
craft by encouraging them to construct collaborative text, post their original writing,
and give and receive thoughtful response that challenges writers to revise and grow.
Dorothy C. Suskind, Ph.D.

Global Wonderings

For this project, this students will respond to weekly questions about their everyday experiences and
wonderings. Through the wiki, students across grade levels and continents will see the responses of their peers.
Through this interactive sharing, students will learn about the life and questions of children across the globe
while at the same time understand our innate sameness.

@Maria Colussa, Argentina
“My learning journey started with a Twitter
conversation, which although I didn‟t know it, would
have a huge impact in the way I approached
teaching from then on.
I started collaborating with teachers who I‟d never
met … Answering calls for Mystery Skype
Sessions, leaving comments in their classroom
blogs … have become part of my daily routine.

I went from being an isolated teacher of
English as a foreign language to a valid
reference to teachers who need to
expose their students to other voices from
around the world.
I have become more confident, and I
have learnt a lot about their
countries, customs, and way of life.”

  • 37. @Maria Colussa, Argentina “My learning journey started with a Twitter conversation, which although I didn‟t know it, would have a huge impact in the way I approached teaching from then on. I started collaborating with teachers who I‟d never met … Answering calls for Mystery Skype Sessions, leaving comments in their classroom blogs … have become part of my daily routine. I went from being an isolated teacher of English as a foreign language to a valid reference to teachers who need to expose their students to other voices from around the world. I have become more confident, and I have learnt a lot about their countries, customs, and way of life.”
