Pre-washing
12
• Soiled linen are collected from all

F&B, Kitchen, Banquets, Rooms,
etc.
• The soiled linen are then
transported to the laundry in two
ways:

trolley and are taken to the laundry
via elevators
• Second is the soiled linens are
dumped directly into the linen chute
which is directly connected to the
laundry

Pre-washing
13
• The soiled linen are then sorted
on three basis:
• Type of fabric
• Color of fabric
• Degree of soiling
• After sorting the linen, the linen
are weighed according to the
washing machine capacity and
are put into the washing
machine for wash cycle

Washing
14
• Washing depends on 4 things:
• Temperatures, washing times, and processing chemical vary according to
the types of fabric being laundered
• Duration – heavily soiled requires more time than lightly soiled linen
• Temperature – generally laundry workers should choose the lowest
possible temperature to do the job effectively so as to save energy
• Agitation – This is the scrubbing action of the machine, too little agitation
which is frequently caused by overloading washers, leads to inadequate
washing
Fabric Temperature Water Level Time
Less Soiled Low Less Less
More Soiled High More More

Rinsing
15
• This is done by using hot and cold water, which are usually
recovered/recycled from earlier steps during last rinse in order to
save water.

Hydro-Extraction
16
• Hydro – water
• Extraction – remove
• Extraction removes at least 80% of the water from the linen used in
the rinsing process.
• It also reduces the drying time.

Dry Cleaning
18
• This is the cleaning of fabrics in substantially non-aqueous liquid medium
• Dry cleaning removes oils as well as many water soluble and some
insoluble materials with the help of detergents and various other agents
• It is done by using dry powder, liquid such as petrol, benzene, and so on
• Unlike laundry, dry cleaning does not cause swelling of the fibers and so
does not lead to shrinkage, wrinkle, and bleeding of color of the fabric
and thus is a safe method for cleaning delicate textiles
• It was formerly known as “French cleaning” or “chemical cleaning”

19
Advantages of Dry Cleaning
19
• Dry cleaning clothes for which laundering is not suitable
• It causes no shrinkage to the fabric
• It does not flatten the pile of fabrics such as velvet
• Colors do not bleed on dry-cleaning
• Stains are more readily removed by dry-cleaning

20
Disadvantages of Dry-Cleaning
20

• Many dry-cleaning solvents are harmful to health of inhaled for long
duration
• After cleaning with solvents, a certain unpleasant smell tends to be
retained by the articles

Process of Dry-Cleaning
22
1.Marking – when soiled linen garments are delivered for dry cleaning they are first sent to the
marking areas here a piece of white fabric with a number securely attached to the garments
for identification
2.The garments then pass to the sorting areas it is done on the basis of soil level colour.
Fabric cloth pouches are checked for valuables of the guest
3.Application of Sorbent – Absorbent are applied to remove spots from all kind of materials
like French chalk bran of flour
4.Pre spotting – Heavily soiled areas of the garments are treated with solvent. To remove oil
borne stain
5.A load of approximately 45 kilos is transferred to the dry cleaning cylinder very delicate
cloths should be place in net bag first solvent is circulated through the clothes
6.Extraction – excess solvent is removed from the garments by centrifugal action in a
revolving perforated cylinder
7.Drying – After extraction the garments are dried in a dryer
8.Filtering and Distillation of Solvent – solvent are expensive therefore filtered out and reused
again. They are not allowed to evaporate
9.Finishing – the garments restored as nearly as possible to its original size

capacity from 7 to 70 kg. Clothes
from washer are put into the
hydro- extractor to remove about
50 to 75% excess water. The
water is extracted from the wash
linen by means of centrifugal
force or application of pressure
After extraction the linens are
damp but not wet.
