EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Entrepreneur is an individual who undertakes the risk associated with creating, organizing,
and owning a business. Entrepreneurship is a process through which individuals identify
opportunities, allocate resources, and create value. The behavior of the entrepreneur
reflects a kind of person willing to put his or her career and financial security on the line and
take risks in the name of an idea, spending much time as well as capital on an uncertain
venture. Person that has potential for bringing positive change is called entrepreneur. The
status of women in Pakistan is among the lowest in the world. UNDP (1996) describes the
strong “inside/outside” dichotomy in Pakistan, where women are restricted to the “inside”
space of home and household, embodied in the tradition of veiling. This restricts women's
access to education, employment, training opportunities and social services. As we all know
in recent years the world has changed immensely and so the role of females too. Even in a
country like Pakistan which is considered to be a typical conservative male oriented society
you will find females stepping out and creating value to their lives by getting education and
by converting themselves into successful entrepreneurs. In this report we will share some of
the real world stories of some successful entrepreneurs. Our first women entrepreneur is
MAHBINA WAHEEDwho is the CEO of Clayworks. Clayworks has been Pakistan's leading
manufacturing ceramics since 1999. Clayworks is a ceramics design and manufacturing firm.
To become a female entrepreneur in Pakistan, let alone in the ceramic industry, requires a
lot of guts. But MahbinaWaheed does it with sheer passion. Clayworks, a Lahore based
company, is an innovative business that was started off solely by Waheed in 1999, after
borrowing some money from her mother. The second women entrepreneur is HIRA SAEED.
Hirasaeed is the owner of TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY SERVICES. This visionary girl knows
exactly how to fulfill her dreams with hard work, determination and creative ideas. January
2012 till today she is making many people amazed by running Training and Consultancy
services with her bright academic records. The third women entrepreneur is SYEDA TUBA
WAASAY is the owner of whispering emotees and one of the women entrepreneur in
Pakistan , She is doing a very creative work according to the needs of customer she make
Hand Made Cards ,Handmade stamps, Hand-made diaries, Handmade scrap books, Frames
for the pictures, Handmade Greeting Cards, Note-Cards. The fourth women entrepreneur is
ZEENAT AYESHA who is the owner ofPappasallis, an Italian Cuisine popped up on the map of
the Federal Capital on 2nd October 1989. Though a small place with only eight tables to
start with, Pappasallis made an instant impact. Since then Pappasallis, one of the pioneers in
Restaurant business has emerged as a lead Restaurant and still holds that position. While
the whole city sleeps, Pappasallis is very much alive with food and music lovers.The fifth and
the final women entrepreneur in this report is MS NARGISwho is the owner of “Fatmi food
canning is an imaginative food packing products and service business aimed at offering high
quality, always fresh, moderately priced canned foods. After studying the entire
questionnaire we have come to the conclusion that everyone is facing different type of
problems but still they are running their business efficiently and effectively but if we have to
select the best entrepreneur among them it would be ZEENAT AYESHA owner of the famous
Italian restaurant, pappasallis.Women entrepreneurs have become a strong driving force in
today’s corporate world. Not only are they able to equalize their duties of both motherhood
and entrepreneurship but they also comprise of almost half of all businesses owned today.

Entrepreneurship is a process through which

uncertain venture. Person that has potential for bringing positive change is called
entrepreneur.
In the 20th century, economist Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950) focused on how the
entrepreneur’s drive for innovation and improvement creates upheaval and change.
Schumpeter viewed entrepreneurship as a force of “creative destruction.” The entrepreneur
carries out “new combinations,” thereby helping render old industries obsolete. Established
ways of doing business are destroyed by the creation of new and better ways to do them.

Perceptions of women in Pakistan
The status of women in Pakistan is among the lowest in the world. UNDP (1996) describes
the strong “inside/outside” dichotomy in Pakistan, where women are restricted to the
“inside” space of home and household, embodied in the tradition of veiling. This restricts
women's access to education, employment, training opportunities and social services.
Another important aspect highlights by stating that the social disapproval of women
working outside the home translates into the invisibility of women in the labour force.
Although they participate actively in the family and farm affairs, their unpaid work is
perceived as a social duty rather than an economic contribution.

Successful Women entrepreneurs of Pakistan!
As we all know in recent years the world has changed immensely and so the role of females
too. Even in a country like Pakistan which is considered to be a typical conservative male
oriented society you will find females stepping out and creating value to their lives by
getting education and by converting themselves into successful entrepreneurs.
In this report we will share some of the real world stories of some successful entrepreneurs.
But before we move further let me tell you being a successful entrepreneur doesn’t mean
an entrepreneur earning millions. Entrepreneur in simple means an individual, who takes
risk, performs an economic activity and earns profit. Now this economic activity can be
either a business project of millions rupees or even of few thousands only.

MAHBINA WAHEED
An entrepreneur, a ceramist and a product designer
To become a female entrepreneur in Pakistan, let alone in the ceramic industry, requires a
lot of guts. But MahbinaWaheed does it with sheer
passion. Clayworks, a Lahore based company, is an
innovative business that was started off solely by
Waheed in 1999, after borrowing some money from her
mother.
Mahbina left her job with a microfinance company,
because she realized that there was no future and she
wanted to produce hand painted modern ceramics. She
said that she have always been educated and brought
up to believe that she should have a career, make a
difference and do something remarkable. After starting
her own business, she has discovered that
entrepreneurship, product design and ceramics are her
calling
Despite having no experience, she teamed up with her friend Zainab, found a factory they
could work from, and produced a few hundred mugs which quickly sold out. Inspired by this
initial success, the duo started their business, Clayworks, in 1999 to manufacture hand
painted ceramic tableware and accessories. With an ethos that her products should be
practical yet creative, and durable but fun, Mahbina has created a stunning range, from
cups and plates to serving dishes and tea sets. The Clayworks product range is constantly
expanding, and the business also supplies crockery to hotels and restaurants, as well as a
range of customized corporate gifts.Following the unfortunate death of her ceramics expert,
and the decision by her partner to leave the company in order to bring up her family,
Mahbina took control to drive the business forward.
Since then Mahbina has transformed herself into a ceramics expert, and has introduced
state of the art production technology. This has led to a doubling of production, and the
business now provides employment for 50 people. Waheed explains that business instincts
run deep in her blood as she has “the genes from my grandfather who was a businessman.”
Today, she is proud of the fact that she “runs the only ceramic factory owned by a woman
entrepreneur, with most of the managerial staff also belonging to the female gender.”
When ask from where you get the idea of your current business and how you have taken
out the solution of the problem facing by the people and that solution gave you a business
opportunity? She replied that it was her original idea and it was not being made in Pakistan
of this variety, quality and design, so there was a gap in the market. Now people do not
need to import or buy from abroad, they can buy high quality good design and colorful
ceramics made in Pakistan as well. Restaurants and hotels and large chain stores can get
them custom made in Pakistan now instead of being stuck with only what is available in the
market.As well as being the only female run ceramics factory in the country, Clayworks has
become a well-known designer brand in Pakistan. Mahbina’s aim of revolutionizing the

country’s ceramics industry is being realized, and her ultimate ambition is to play a part in
the industrialization of Pakistan.
After running her company for 12 years, Waheed, a Smith College graduate believes,
“ceramics have always had an appeal. I wanted to make these kinds of ceramics in Pakistan
because they are not being made here. We have factories but they make low-end products
and don’t have design sense at all.” Patriotic to the core, Waheed said, “I am a firm believer
in making things in Pakistan, hence I am manufacturing here. We should be proud of the
label ‘Made in Pakistan’ on our products. Pakistani products can be as appealing as any
other!”
The design philosophy behind Clayworks is to be original, creative, fun yet practical. “We
make items [for] people, primarily to eat or drink from [but] they also have to be user
friendly. Sometimes we are requested by clients to make items that are not practical but
look good, so we try to make them see why it would, not work and would in fact cause
problems,” she says.
When asked what items are available at Clayworks, Waheed says, “Anything you would
need to eat out of, drink from or serve from like, plates, bowls, mugs, tea sets, teacups,
platters, serving dishes, condiment pots etc. We also make decorative items like vases, oil
burners and some garden items. And now decorative tiles as well!”
Waheed is currently involved in a project in Lahore about which she says, “At the moment [I
am supplying tiles for] a mosque being built in Lahore. It’s a tiny mosque but it is designed
on traditional Islamic patterns. We use old techniques but have made the tiles with better
durability and finish. It’s quite a challenge.”
Social networking site Facebook has allowed Waheed “to share new products with clients
and get their feedback. Though, the page is only a year old, it’s a new tool for interacting
with our clients. It has helped our clients in letting us now that we have to open a Karachi
outlet now! We also get to tell them about promotions, new items, share our ideas, etc.”
Currently working on an interesting project, Waheed says, “We are working on a line for
kids, again by popular demand, like decorative items and eating platters. We get a lot of
feedback on our Facebook page so we try to implement as much of it as possible.”

Hirasaeed is the owner of TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY
SERVICES. This visionary girl knows exactly how to fulfill her
dreams with hard work, determination and creative ideas.
January 2012 till today she is making many people amazed by
running Training and Consultancy services with her bright
academic records. She is not only the owner of training and
consultancy but also Social media executive at DG harbor. She
has also been an internee in DG harbor and national bank of
Bank of Pakistan. She has done her BBA from DadaBhouy
Institute of higher education. She belongs to a well-educated
family. When she was doing BBA and was pursuing semester 2
there, she got a chance to attend a guest speaker session at
the university, the speaker shared his success story with the students. She got really inspired
from him and get in touched with that speaker and met him for once. From That day she
never stepped back from that motivation. She started her own firm from just a social media
page and now carrying more than 50 people on board who leave no stone unturned in
making training events successful. She took initiative of running her own business when she
saw women working in her surrounding; she thought that if she also gets this independence
than she will be able to utilize her capabilities in a better way. When she started thinking of
her own business she got partial support from her family because it is difficult for a woman
to run her own business in male dominant society. Moreover she did not get any financial
support or training from government or any other institution. She faced many difficulties
including financial problem as well because she used her personal savings to run her
business, but the biggest problem she faced was the law and order situation of the country
due to which she faced difficulty in providing training services. Pakistan is a male dominant
society especially in the field of business but she got positive response and cooperation. She
had not done any job before plus no experience of running a business, before she was a bit
shy and was not much confident in what to do and from where to do and how to do it. After
so many successful events she made herself stand among crowd as a LEADER!
Hira Says,
T&Cs for me is a moment, a moment in which I have been living my life since an year and
will always keep it near to my life. I cannot count how many times I think of giving up in this
whole era but ultimately I found arms of my mentors that were there to carry me up and
say “You can” when everyone thought otherwise.
It is not only good but the best option for ladies to start their own business, especially the in
house business; GOD has given them the capability to manage things better than men. I run
my own business along with studies, my social life, and my job and go out every weekend
with friends. The stress and tension that i get before any event gives me pleasure,
UNMATCHABLE PLEASURE. Now I don’t say I own T&Cs; I say T&Cs owns me!

entrepreneur in Pakistan , She is doing a very creative work according to the needs of

got training from anywhere, all she do is put her heart in to whatever she create, and she
create complete customized art work.. Her academic qualification is PhD Informative
Sciences 2009 ,she is belong to stable family that’s why she didn’t performed any job before
,but still think that work is a vital part of our live and liveliness that’s why she started her
own business through her personal saving , when she started her business she face Lack of
motivational ,moral supports, Work and family life balance and Honest and trained workers
, she have 10 to 20 employees ,she is married and Don’t have any support from her home
but still she is trying to manage her business and partial agreed that it’s very difficult to
start doing business in Pakistan specially being a woman because She think that:

With more women starting businesses and succeeding there’s an opportunity to reshape
the working landscape. Women have been starting businesses at a higher rate than men for
the last 20 years, let me make it very clear here: I’m not saying women are better or that
women starting more businesses means the world is all rainbows and butterflies. Women
just do things differently in the world of business and different should be welcomed.

MS. ZEENAT AYESHA
PAPPASALIS, ISLAMABAD
Ayesha Zeenat, better known as Gina, has given a practical
shape and form to her academic specialization. She was in Saudi
Arabia when she wanted to go abroad to study. Her father, who
was a brigadier at that time, declined by saying he cannot
afford. She took a job in a multinational and earned her way to
foreign education. She did a Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant
Management from the Conrad Hilton College, University of
Houston. After working as an intern for various restaurants as
chef-helper, accounts assistant and various other restaurantrelated jobs, she had the strong realization that there was no
future in seeking a good job in this field. She then decided to do
something on her own and started the first original Italian
restaurant in Islamabad. Her father provided financing for the project. It was as a big risk, as
Islamabad was not an easy city for a food business. However, what started as an eight-table
restaurant, proved a success from day one. It was the right concept at the right time.
Islamabad had no international food chain and an Italian restaurant proved a treat for
customers. Under the able supervision of Gina, and her original recipes, the small eatery,
which started in 1989, has flourished into a double storey, 40-table restaurant in Islamabad,
with another branch in Rawalpindi. Since 1998, Gina has expanded her food business by
adding a café for light snacks, Bistro Alfredo. Pure dedication and hard work have enabled
Gina to maintain an ever-rising progress in the food business. Gina expresses the secret of
her success by saying “I have always kept a strong check on the working conditions at my
restaurant, and try to maintain a personal rapport with all my customers”
There are more than 20 employees in her restaurant. Pakistan is basically a male dominated
society, especially in the field of business, but still she found Cooperative attitude of men’s.
She is highly agreed that it’s very difficult to start doing business in Pakistan specially being a
woman. She also don’t you have proper work support at home Like maids, parents, in-laws
etc. The main problems she faced, when she started her business are Lack of confidence and
shyness, financial problems, Work and family life balance, Honest and trained workers, Very
high cost of raw material, Lack of proper information, guidance and advice about to run

her own business because of rising cost of living and high expenses, for the purpose to
upgrade your life style and she saw in her surrounding that women have started working, so
she thought that if she also got this independence than she will be able to utilize her
capabilities in a better way.
She thinks that it is a good choice for ladies to start doing their own business. Today in the
20th century Women can do anything and have ability and skills to take decision and
manage everything. she suggest that the Women before starting their own business firstly
they should start the business on small scale and then take step forward after getting some
Experience about work that they were started. All they have to do is hard work as hard work
is a key to success.

Fatmi food canning is an imaginative food packing products and service business aimed at
offering high quality, always fresh, moderately priced canned foods where we cook quality
foods and pack to stay fresh long and also offers you to cook food for your loved ones.

MISSION:
“We view ourselves as partners with our customers, our workers, our community and our
environment. We aim to become a regionally recognized brand name. Our goal is moderate
growth, annual profitability and maintaining our sense of humor.”

VISSION:
5 years from now, Fatmi food canning will become best service and relief provider for those
who cannot manage to cook food daily or don’t want their loved ones to hangout for food in
their absence.

NARGIS ALI
FATMI FOOD CANNING
I took interview from Miss NARGIS she is a women entrepreneur. She is doing a very
creative work according to the needs of customer. She is very hard worker and she has done
bachelors in arts. She offers canned food and she also packs cooked food. You can bring
cooked food to her and she will canned pack it. She has given her cards to many bakeries
located at Nazimabad like Dilpasand, Ehbab sweets, Qasar-e-shireen, Hatmi sweets, haidry
bakery etc. Many of her customers give their foods to these bakeries and they deliver it to
her home and she canned pack these food. You can able to preserve this food to maximum
6 months and it remains fresh. Expiry of canned pack food is upto 6 month either it is any
food. Charges of canned pack food is 1 kg pack = Rs 150 and ½ kg pack = Rs 120. Her timing
is 9 A.M to 2 P.M. Many people specially give their food for canned packing when they go to
haj and umrah. And because of this, demand of her packing usually increases during haj and
umrah season and eid seasons. When she starts a business she took loan from the “first
women bank” very easily.

She is unmarried women and her family is very supportive. She has 3 to 5 workers and her
elder sister is also unmarried and she also supporting her. Her elder sister is also doing work
with her and she also run her own beauty parlor at home. She said she earn enough to live
independently and she able to live a luxurious life now. She is very satisfied with her work.
She said I have in mind since my childhood to work something new and creative according
to the needs and demands of customers. And all women should take stand to do something
for themselves and their economy. “To be a successful business woman all women should
have confidence and full family support. I believe it is necessary to do business for
specifically a woman”; said Miss Nargis.

COMPARISON
Women’s entrepreneurship is expanding around the world. Women represent more than
one-third of all people involved in entrepreneurial activity and are likely to play an even
greater role when informal sectors are considered. Across the world, generations of women
from very different backgrounds contribute to their environments and are showing very
encouraging signs of entrepreneurial spirit.
In this report we have interviewed five different women entrepreneurs of Pakistan and at
the end we havecompared all of them on the basis of the questionnaire solved by them.
After studying the entire questionnaire we have come to the conclusion that everyone is
facing different type of problems but still they are running their business efficiently and
effectively but if we have to select the best entrepreneur among them it would be ZEENAT
AYESHA owner of the famous Italian restaurant, pappasallis. Because of the following
reasons:
she done diploma in hotel and restaurant management and her business is also
about the restaurant so she have more knowledge about her business and can able
to run her business on the basis of her knowledge .
she work as an internee in various restaurants as chef-helper, accounts assistant and
various other restaurant-related jobs soshe has a working experience before starting
her own business.
It was as a big risk, as Islamabad was not an easy city for a food business. However,
what started as an eight-table restaurant, proved a success from day one. It was the
right concept at the right time.
If we talk about her marital status zeenat Ayesha is Divorced. She doesn’t have any
proper work support at home like maids, parents, in-laws etc but still running her
business successfully.

CONCLUSION
Women entrepreneurs have become a strong driving force in today’s corporate world. Not
only are they able to equalize their duties of both motherhood and entrepreneurship but
they also comprise of almost half of all businesses owned today. Many women
entrepreneurs have an average age of 40-60 years old because they have had previous
careers in other areas. Their primary goal is not monetary reward but rather personal
satisfaction and community involvement. Many of them are educated and assemble into
groups in order to pool business ideas and resources together.
Women entrepreneurs also have more access to business capital and seed funding than
ever before. Yet despite the many opportunities, many prospective women entrepreneurs
are intimidated to move forward. Overall, there are many promising forthcoming
predictions for women business owners. They will continue to form female business
networks, transition towards information technology, and rely strongly on e-commerce as
their form of trade.

  • 3. WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS OF PAKISTAN October 7, 2013 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Entrepreneur is an individual who undertakes the risk associated with creating, organizing, and owning a business. Entrepreneurship is a process through which individuals identify opportunities, allocate resources, and create value. The behavior of the entrepreneur reflects a kind of person willing to put his or her career and financial security on the line and take risks in the name of an idea, spending much time as well as capital on an uncertain venture. Person that has potential for bringing positive change is called entrepreneur. The status of women in Pakistan is among the lowest in the world. UNDP (1996) describes the strong “inside/outside” dichotomy in Pakistan, where women are restricted to the “inside” space of home and household, embodied in the tradition of veiling. This restricts women's access to education, employment, training opportunities and social services. As we all know in recent years the world has changed immensely and so the role of females too. Even in a country like Pakistan which is considered to be a typical conservative male oriented society you will find females stepping out and creating value to their lives by getting education and by converting themselves into successful entrepreneurs. In this report we will share some of the real world stories of some successful entrepreneurs. Our first women entrepreneur is MAHBINA WAHEEDwho is the CEO of Clayworks. Clayworks has been Pakistan's leading manufacturing ceramics since 1999. Clayworks is a ceramics design and manufacturing firm. To become a female entrepreneur in Pakistan, let alone in the ceramic industry, requires a lot of guts. But MahbinaWaheed does it with sheer passion. Clayworks, a Lahore based company, is an innovative business that was started off solely by Waheed in 1999, after borrowing some money from her mother. The second women entrepreneur is HIRA SAEED. Hirasaeed is the owner of TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY SERVICES. This visionary girl knows exactly how to fulfill her dreams with hard work, determination and creative ideas. January 2012 till today she is making many people amazed by running Training and Consultancy services with her bright academic records. The third women entrepreneur is SYEDA TUBA WAASAY is the owner of whispering emotees and one of the women entrepreneur in Pakistan , She is doing a very creative work according to the needs of customer she make Hand Made Cards ,Handmade stamps, Hand-made diaries, Handmade scrap books, Frames for the pictures, Handmade Greeting Cards, Note-Cards. The fourth women entrepreneur is ZEENAT AYESHA who is the owner ofPappasallis, an Italian Cuisine popped up on the map of the Federal Capital on 2nd October 1989. Though a small place with only eight tables to start with, Pappasallis made an instant impact. Since then Pappasallis, one of the pioneers in Restaurant business has emerged as a lead Restaurant and still holds that position. While the whole city sleeps, Pappasallis is very much alive with food and music lovers.The fifth and the final women entrepreneur in this report is MS NARGISwho is the owner of “Fatmi food canning is an imaginative food packing products and service business aimed at offering high quality, always fresh, moderately priced canned foods. After studying the entire questionnaire we have come to the conclusion that everyone is facing different type of problems but still they are running their business efficiently and effectively but if we have to select the best entrepreneur among them it would be ZEENAT AYESHA owner of the famous Italian restaurant, pappasallis.Women entrepreneurs have become a strong driving force in today’s corporate world. Not only are they able to equalize their duties of both motherhood and entrepreneurship but they also comprise of almost half of all businesses owned today. Page 3

In the 20th century, economist Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950) focused on how the entrepreneur’s drive for innovation and improvement creates upheaval and change. Schumpeter viewed entrepreneurship as a force of “creative destruction.” The entrepreneur carries out “new combinations,” thereby helping render old industries obsolete. Established ways of doing business are destroyed by the creation of new and better ways to do them. Perceptions of women in Pakistan The status of women in Pakistan is among the lowest in the world. Another important aspect highlights by stating that the social disapproval of women working outside the home translates into the invisibility of women in the labour force. Although they participate actively in the family and farm affairs, their unpaid work is perceived as a social duty rather than an economic contribution. Successful Women entrepreneurs of Pakistan! As we all know in recent years the world has changed immensely and so the role of females too. Even in a country like Pakistan which is considered to be a typical conservative male oriented society you will find females stepping out and creating value to their lives by getting education and by converting themselves into successful entrepreneurs. In this report we will share some of the real world stories of some successful entrepreneurs. But before we move further let me tell you being a successful entrepreneur doesn’t mean an entrepreneur earning millions. Entrepreneur in simple means an individual, who takes risk, performs an economic activity and earns profit. WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS OF PAKISTAN October 7, 2013 MAHBINA WAHEED An entrepreneur, a ceramist and a product designer To become a female entrepreneur in Pakistan, let alone in the ceramic industry, requires a lot of guts. But MahbinaWaheed does it with sheer passion. Clayworks, a Lahore based company, is an innovative business that was started off solely by Waheed in 1999, after borrowing some money from her mother. Mahbina left her job with a microfinance company, because she realized that there was no future and she wanted to produce hand painted modern ceramics. She said that she have always been educated and brought up to believe that she should have a career, make a difference and do something remarkable. After starting her own business, she has discovered that entrepreneurship, product design and ceramics are her calling Despite having no experience, she teamed up with her friend Zainab, found a factory they could work from, and produced a few hundred mugs which quickly sold out. Inspired by this initial success, the duo started their business, Clayworks, in 1999 to manufacture hand painted ceramic tableware and accessories. With an ethos that her products should be practical yet creative, and durable but fun, Mahbina has created a stunning range, from cups and plates to serving dishes and tea sets. The Clayworks product range is constantly expanding, and the business also supplies crockery to hotels and restaurants, as well as a range of customized corporate gifts.Following the unfortunate death of her ceramics expert, and the decision by her partner to leave the company in order to bring up her family, Mahbina took control to drive the business forward. Since then Mahbina has transformed herself into a ceramics expert, and has introduced state of the art production technology. This has led to a doubling of production, and the business now provides employment for 50 people. Waheed explains that business instincts run deep in her blood as she has “the genes from my grandfather who was a businessman.” Today, she is proud of the fact that she “runs the only ceramic factory owned by a woman entrepreneur, with most of the managerial staff also belonging to the female gender.” When ask from where you get the idea of your current business and how you have taken out the solution of the problem facing by the people and that solution gave you a business opportunity? She replied that it was her original idea and it was not being made in Pakistan of this variety, quality and design, so there was a gap in the market. Now people do not need to import or buy from abroad, they can buy high quality good design and colorful ceramics made in Pakistan as well. Restaurants and hotels and large chain stores can get them custom made in Pakistan now instead of being stuck with only what is available in the market.As well as being the only female run ceramics factory in the country, Clayworks has become a well-known designer brand in Pakistan. Mahbina’s aim of revolutionizing the Page 7
  • 8. WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS OF PAKISTAN October 7, 2013 country’s ceramics industry is being realized, and her ultimate ambition is to play a part in the industrialization of Pakistan. After running her company for 12 years, Waheed, a Smith College graduate believes, “ceramics have always had an appeal. I wanted to make these kinds of ceramics in Pakistan because they are not being made here. We have factories but they make low-end products and don’t have design sense at all.” Patriotic to the core, Waheed said, “I am a firm believer in making things in Pakistan, hence I am manufacturing here. We should be proud of the label ‘Made in Pakistan’ on our products. Pakistani products can be as appealing as any other!” The design philosophy behind Clayworks is to be original, creative, fun yet practical. “We make items [for] people, primarily to eat or drink from [but] they also have to be user friendly. Sometimes we are requested by clients to make items that are not practical but look good, so we try to make them see why it would, not work and would in fact cause problems,” she says. When asked what items are available at Clayworks, Waheed says, “Anything you would need to eat out of, drink from or serve from like, plates, bowls, mugs, tea sets, teacups, platters, serving dishes, condiment pots etc. We also make decorative items like vases, oil burners and some garden items. And now decorative tiles as well!” Waheed is currently involved in a project in Lahore about which she says, “At the moment [I am supplying tiles for] a mosque being built in Lahore. It’s a tiny mosque but it is designed on traditional Islamic patterns. We use old techniques but have made the tiles with better durability and finish. It’s quite a challenge.” Social networking site Facebook has allowed Waheed “to share new products with clients and get their feedback. Though, the page is only a year old, it’s a new tool for interacting with our clients. It has helped our clients in letting us now that we have to open a Karachi outlet now! We also get to tell them about promotions, new items, share our ideas, etc.” Currently working on an interesting project, Waheed says, “We are working on a line for kids, again by popular demand, like decorative items and eating platters. We get a lot of feedback on our Facebook page so we try to implement as much of it as possible.” Page 8

She is not only the owner of training and consultancy but also Social media executive at DG harbor. She has also been an internee in DG harbor and national bank of Bank of Pakistan. She has done her BBA from DadaBhouy Institute of higher education. She belongs to a well-educated family. When she was doing BBA and was pursuing semester 2 there, she got a chance to attend a guest speaker session at the university, the speaker shared his success story with the students. She got really inspired from him and get in touched with that speaker and met him for once. From That day she never stepped back from that motivation. She started her own firm from just a social media page and now carrying more than 50 people on board who leave no stone unturned in making training events successful. She took initiative of running her own business when she saw women working in her surrounding; she thought that if she also gets this independence than she will be able to utilize her capabilities in a better way. When she started thinking of her own business she got partial support from her family because it is difficult for a woman to run her own business in male dominant society. Moreover she did not get any financial support or training from government or any other institution. She faced many difficulties including financial problem as well because she used her personal savings to run her business, but the biggest problem she faced was the law and order situation of the country due to which she faced difficulty in providing training services. ZEENAT AYESHA PAPPASALIS, ISLAMABAD Ayesha Zeenat, better known as Gina, has given a practical shape and form to her academic specialization. She was in Saudi Arabia when she wanted to go abroad to study. Her father, who was a brigadier at that time, declined by saying he cannot afford. She took a job in a multinational and earned her way to foreign education. She did a Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management from the Conrad Hilton College, University of Houston. After working as an intern for various restaurants as chef-helper, accounts assistant and various other restaurantrelated jobs, she had the strong realization that there was no future in seeking a good job in this field. She then decided to do something on her own and started the first original Italian restaurant in Islamabad. Her father provided financing for the project. It was as a big risk, as Islamabad was not an easy city for a food business. However, what started as an eight-table restaurant, proved a success from day one. It was the right concept at the right time. Islamabad had no international food chain and an Italian restaurant proved a treat for customers. Under the able supervision of Gina, and her original recipes, the small eatery, which started in 1989, has flourished into a double storey, 40-table restaurant in Islamabad, with another branch in Rawalpindi. Since 1998, Gina has expanded her food business by adding a café for light snacks, Bistro Alfredo. Pure dedication and hard work have enabled Gina to maintain an ever-rising progress in the food business. Gina expresses the secret of her success by saying “I have always kept a strong check on the working conditions at my restaurant, and try to maintain a personal rapport with all my customers” There are more than 20 employees in her restaurant. She is very hard worker and she has done bachelors in arts. She offers canned food and she also packs cooked food. You can bring cooked food to her and she will canned pack it. She has given her cards to many bakeries located at Nazimabad like Dilpasand, Ehbab sweets, Qasar-e-shireen, Hatmi sweets, haidry bakery etc. Many of her customers give their foods to these bakeries and they deliver it to her home and she canned pack these food. You can able to preserve this food to maximum 6 months and it remains fresh. Expiry of canned pack food is upto 6 month either it is any food. Charges of canned pack food is 1 kg pack = Rs 150 and ½ kg pack = Rs 120. Her timing is 9 A.M to 2 P.M. Many people specially give their food for canned packing when they go to haj and umrah. And because of this, demand of her packing usually increases during haj and umrah season and eid seasons. When she starts a business she took loan from the “first women bank” very easily. Page 16

She said I have in mind since my childhood to work something new and creative according to the needs and demands of customers. And all women should take stand to do something for themselves and their economy. “To be a successful business woman all women should have confidence and full family support. I believe it is necessary to do business for specifically a woman”; said Miss Nargis. COMPARISON Women’s entrepreneurship is expanding around the world. Women represent more than one-third of all people involved in entrepreneurial activity and are likely to play an even greater role when informal sectors are considered. Across the world, generations of women from very different backgrounds contribute to their environments and are showing very encouraging signs of entrepreneurial spirit. In this report we have interviewed five different women entrepreneurs of Pakistan and at the end we havecompared all of them on the basis of the questionnaire solved by them. After studying the entire questionnaire we have come to the conclusion that everyone is facing different type of problems but still they are running their business efficiently and effectively but if we have to select the best entrepreneur among them it would be ZEENAT AYESHA owner of the famous Italian restaurant, pappasallis. Because of the following reasons: she done diploma in hotel and restaurant management and her business is also about the restaurant so she have more knowledge about her business and can able to run her business on the basis of her knowledge . she work as an internee in various restaurants as chef-helper, accounts assistant and various other restaurant-related jobs soshe has a working experience before starting her own business. It was as a big risk, as Islamabad was not an easy city for a food business. However, what started as an eight-table restaurant, proved a success from day one. It was the right concept at the right time. If we talk about her marital status zeenat Ayesha is Divorced. Not only are they able to equalize their duties of both motherhood and entrepreneurship but they also comprise of almost half of all businesses owned today. Many women entrepreneurs have an average age of 40-60 years old because they have had previous careers in other areas. Their primary goal is not monetary reward but rather personal satisfaction and community involvement. Many of them are educated and assemble into groups in order to pool business ideas and resources together. Women entrepreneurs also have more access to business capital and seed funding than ever before. Yet despite the many opportunities, many prospective women entrepreneurs are intimidated to move forward. Overall, there are many promising forthcoming predictions for women business owners.
