Thermal decomposition
process
Converts solid matter into
gaseous form
Resultant gas is flammable
GEM methodology –
Downdraft Gasification
– Uses high heat in oxygen-
starved process to convert
solids into gaseous fuel or
“syngas”
– Vacuum pulls gas thru
bottom of gasifier with no
emissions
– Small-scale efficiency
– Low-tar gas producing
system

The GEM handles your municipal waste. While we understand that people will throw anything and everything into their trash, the GEM derives no energy content from metal and glass. E-waste, construction and demolition waste, and other toxic wastes aren’t meant to be put in the GEM. The GEM’s footprint is small and each installation can be modified to meet individual customer needs.
By processing your waste on-site, we can help you meet your sustainability goals by diverting waste that would go to a landfill and save you money at the same time by avoiding grid supplied electricity and natural gas bills used for heating and air conditioning. Our ash (based on our feedstock) has been tested by the Massachusetts DEP and it has been found safe for landfilling. In some cases the ash can be repurposed and used in road building, cinderblock manufacture, or in fertilizer.
On the front end, our goal is to make loading the GEM as easy as your current waste disposal method. If you handle 3 tons all at once or if you make multiple smaller deposits at your dumpster, we will design a front end that will meet your needs. Top loading, side loading, or other configurations are all possible. Some customers have asked for a chute down from the 2nd floor. Our site engineer will visit your site, evaluate your waste management process, and configure a front end to suit.Every front end conveyor will require restricted access for feeding. Only authorized personnel will have access.
The GEM has two main back end configurations. One option is a boiler which can be used to produce hot water or steamThe other main option is a combined heat and power system using a diesel engineThe CHP package comes with a full heat recovery package where we collect heat from the engine coolant and the exhaust gas as well as excess heat from the gasifier. We can provide heat in the form of hot air, hot water, or steam.Choice of the backend is of course up to the customer but our ROI analysis will determine the options that demonstrate the quickest payback.
We’ve installed over 100 remote sensors inside the GEM. Each GEM can be monitored in real-time. By monitoring your GEM, IST will be able to anticipate problems before they become problems.
This chart compares the savings in terms of greenhouse gas emissions from waste-to-energy and various alternative energy sources versus landfilling your waste and purchasing energy from a utility.Incineration with energy capture gives you heat and electricity. Wind and solar offset greenhouse gases produced as a result of electric generation only. The GEM has three sources of greenhouse gas savings, electric production, heat, and waste disposal and offsets more greenhouse gasses than the other alternatives.
Each customer will receive an individualized payback analysisThe payback is a function of how much waste you have and the composition of your waste. Plastic has more energy than paper which in turn has more energy than food, which is mostly water. The more energy rich the material going in, the more energy you will get going out. A mix of material is actually best. The other variables in the payback model are your costs for energy, heat, and waste disposal. In the US, there are Federal Tax incentives for CHP equipment, credits for renewable energy production, and the ability to expense the equipment in the first year. There may also be incentives at the state level as well.Compared to other alternatives such as wind and solar, payback for the GEM is significantly shorter.
