strings to produce a vibration which produces sound

• Symphonies become VERY popular!
• Symphony: An elaborate musical composition for full orchestra that includes 4
movements
• Sonatas: A piece for an instrumental soloist with a pianist accompaniment
• Minuet is a very popular dance and type of music in this time period.
• Minuet: A slow, stately ballroom dance for two in triple time. (Usually
conducted in 1)
• Gavotte was another popular dance, usually in 4/4 time
• String quartets become increasingly written and played
• Piano becomes the main instrument for composers

*Operas and program music make a comeback!
* Program Music: The music that goes along with an
opera or play
*People became fascinated with romances from Mid
Evil times which lead to a high interest in
developing these types of pieces
*Poetry and stories of heroes were very popular and
were starting to be included into operas and plays
*Dynamics became wider; meaning that the
composers made the instrumentalists play much,
much softer and much, much louder! Tempos were
also much more extreme

included and now composers have total freedom in their

This time period starts mixing elements from multiple
cultures to make new and never seen before
compositions
With all the advances in technology, composers are able
to use different types of instruments
Complex rhythms are 20th century composers’ forte
Jazz, blues, folk, rock-n-roll, country are all types of
music that are considered part of this musical era

Fun fact about this time period: Igor Stravinsky premiered
a piece called “The Rite of Spring” and the dancing and
the notes were so unusual that it caused a RIOT from the
audience!
