Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts
1. How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
Martyn Lyczkowski
2. During the making of the trailer, poster and magazine cover we would try to make the three link
together as much as possible through the use of different elements. This would include the use of;
props, costume, hair & makeup, colours, fonts and the main characters themselves. These different
elements would be shown throughout the three different ancillary texts.
3. The first link which connects all three media products is the
title “The White Brothers”. The name of our film on the poster,
the main feature in the magazine and included in the film
trailer these words symbolize our production as a whole.
During the trailer drug props were used, and more specifically
flour which is equivalent to cocaine in the film. At the top of my
film poster I decided to use a font which represents cocaine
and not just with colour but the texture itself in order to
connect with the film more. The link between the drugs and
the text is a strong one.
4. The way in which the characters are dressed across the three
products varies, yet there is some sort of connection. The films is
obvious, blackout clothes and trainers as well as hoods and
tracksuit bottoms to symbolise gang crime. The magazine front
cover sticks to the “swag” approach although slightly different
which is perfectly fine as the magazine is not directly about the
character from the film but about the actor himself. The poster
holds two main images of our characters, however there is no
arguing that both Hakeem and Keanan are wearing completely
different attire than in the trailer. The only link which i can link are
black shoes as well as a dominance of dark colours.
5. The main characters themselves were a massive
element which I included in my poster, magazine
and trailer. The three characters give the ancillary
texts and the trailer life and make seem more fitting
due to the relevance across the three. The
characters help link these three together as they
are portrayed in each, however in the magazine I
decided to portray the actor which plays the
antagonist instead of the actual character, however
it still links perfectly as I look the same as I did in
the film which means I am easily recognised.
6. Ultimately I believe that the three products work well together
despite there being any obvious visual link other than perhaps
the characters themselves. The reason for this is that they all
cover the main piece of information which is the title of the film,
as well as all following their own style, the magazine cover
especially, to display some of the themes which surround our
film. The location is displayed through the background, the
clothing is fitting too with the snapback and the fonts are plain
and white which has connotations to cocaine. The poster and the
film both clearly present the cocaine theme which is easy to link
together. A link between the poster and the magazine perhaps is
the grey background of the poster and the characters’ clothing,
together with the grey t-shirt which I’m wearing on the magazine
