1. First, a piece of paper with a set of tiny dots, virtually
invisible to the naked eye, printed onto the paper or
form from a standard laser jet printer. Text and graph-
ics are printed onto the form as an overlay, usually at
the same time that the dot pattern is laid down.
Second, a digital pen that combines a conventional
ballpoint ink writing pen with a miniature camera, as
well as, a pressure and vector sensors inside the pen.
The pen is battery operated and charged with a dock-
ing station.

There are two key elements that form the common basis for our digital writing solutions:
The pen stores data as it is being used to write, with the dot pattern effectively providing a set of coordinates for
interpreting the position of the pen strokes on the page. The pen is available as a dockable device (in which case the
user periodically docks the pen to a computer for uploading the data) or as a Bluetooth® device (in which case the
data can be uploaded in near-real or real time via compatible cell phones or BlackBerry® devices).
The pattern formed by these dots is unique to every individual page (unlike offerings from many other licensees, who
re-use dot patterns). Thus, in addition to its basic function of allowing the pen to “know” where it is on a page, the
pattern identifies the form being filled out and “Knows” when the user moves from one form to another, even if the
visible printing on the forms is identical.

Forms Design
Successful data interpretation—i.e. translating the handwritten marks into digitalized data—starts with forms
design. Each entry is a separate field; defined attributes of the fields (data types such as year, date, phone, zip
code, name) are key to highly accurate digitalization of the handwritten data by comparing the initial interpreta-
tion against lists of possible entries, including customer-specific terminology.
Digital Printing
The quality of the microprinted dot pattern is critical to the overall solution, and is not as easily achieved as might
be expected, especially when being laid down at production speeds. The tiniest variations in the pattern can
make it impossible to accurately identify the form, accurately digitize the pen movements, or both. This printing
process has been standardized and documented according to the ISO 9001:2000 standard to ensure consistent
high quality on every sheet. A key to the success of this process is a unique file preparation methodology that
guarantees the pattern quality and helps achieve optimum production speeds.
Image output: Delivery of highly accurate form images in PDF, TIF, or JPEG format, either as data transfer or
as e-mail attachments.
Data output: Interpretation of the captured pen strokes, and output as XML data via data transfer (i.e. FTP) or
via e-mail.
Document viewer: Stored form images can be retrieved and viewed on-screen, side-by-side with the interpreted

The solution also includes especially robust handwriting-interpretation software. The pen strokes are analyzed via multi-
ple interpretation engines and in the context of the field attributes and expected entries; the software also “learns” from
human-intervention validation. Of course, no ICR (intelligent character recognition) software yet developed is 100%
accurate. For this reason, customers may also select optional verification services with various levels of human interven-
tion for further verification of interpreted data.

For document management systems that are already partially automated, there is no need to scan the images.
Little or no training required: Field users continue to use a pen to write on paper just as they have always done.

The cycle of forms costs covers four phases:
The pre-usage/acquisition phase: Forms design/approval/management costs; forms purchase and purchase-process
costs; and forms inventory/distribution costs.
The usage phase: Employees pick up or acquire the forms; cost of time spent filling out the form.

Fraud Detection with the use of the Digital Pen and Paper
The use of the Digital Pen and Paper provides a robust ability for the protection of data and detection of misuse of the
Digital Pen and Paper solution.
Each time the Digital Pen and Paper is used we capture and log the Date and Time that each field on a form was filed
out, which pen was used to fill out each field on the form and which user accessed On-line verification website tools to
modify the Handwriting Recognitions engines text values.
In addition, we can extract the order in which fields processed, allowing for the determination that a form was modified
after a signature was captured. Additionally, Forms can be Locked either programmatically or manually to prevent
more data being captured by the Pen and transmitted for processing. As an example, we can programmatically lock a
form once a signature is captured.
The system also stores and extracts the database logs that contains the entire history of Digital Pen and Paper’s use
and transmission; detailing all access, storage, status changes and updates to forms.
Finally, the digital forms can be assigned to individual pens or groups of pens preventing misuse of the forms by other
pen users.
Data Security
The digital pen uses proprietary patterns to prevent the recreation of handwriting if the pen is lost or stolen. The only
information stored on the pen are X and Y coordinates and without the proprietary underling pattern algorithms the data
is unusable. In addition, transmission of the data from the Bluetooth devices to the servers is encrypted using secure
sockets.
