What to do:
1.Choose among your group who will act as organizer,
leader and presenter.
2.The organizer will get all the materials needed for the
activity.
3.The leader will select the first object, put it in a basin,
together with the members, observes the material’s
characteristics and write them in the space provided in
the worksheet.
4.Pour a tablespoon of water into the material. Observes
what happens.
10. Marie Jaja T. Roa Santa Maria West Central School Schools Division of Ilocos
What to do:
5.Lift up the material and squeeze. Let the water drip
down on the basin. Did the water come out? Did
the materials get wet? Is the material heavier when
wet?
6.Record your observations.
7.Do the same for each object.
8.After observing all the materials, clean up the
working table.

1. What characteristics did you observe from each of
the materials before placing them in water?
2. When you added water to the material, what
happened to the water?/to the material?

Water soaks into many materials. These materials
absorb water. They are called porous.
Porous materials are materials having small holes that
allow air or liquid to pass through.
15. Marie Jaja T. Roa Santa Maria West Central School Schools Division of Ilocos
There are a lot of materials that water will not soak in
to. These materials repel water.
These non- porous materials like plastic and rubber,
does not allow water to pass through.

1. Why do you think some materials absorbed
water and other did not?
2. Why would some people prefer plastic bag
than a paper bag?
3. During rainy days, what kind of material are
you going to use to prevent you from getting
wet? Explain why.
Editor's Notes
If you spilt your drink what sort of material would you use to mop it up?
Would you use an old plastic bag?
Would you use a cotton rag
Would you use kitchen roll?
Would you use a piece of rubber?
Which materials do you think will absorb water? Which materials do you think will soak up water?
Which materials do you think will repel water? Which materials do you think will not soak up water?
Round, think. Soft, etc.
It disappeared and the material got wet.
The water dripped and we can take out material and see the water.

Sponge and cotton is very porous, which makes it a natural absorber of water.
Porous materials or materials that absorbed water have tiny holes or pores that allows water to pass through it. Why materials that repel water or non- porous materials does not allow water to pass through it.
Some people prefer plastic bag than a paper bag because paper bags easily get wet.
We need to use raincoats to prevent us from getting wet. Plastic raincoat repel water, so it doesn’t absorb water.
