5. TURISM IN SICILY Sicily has important monuments. Now I am going to show you some of them… Palazzio dei Normanni Fontana Pretoria Castello de la Zisa Teatro Massimo
6. PALAZZIO DEI NORMANNI The Arabs built it in 9th century in Palermo. When the Arabs left Sicily, Normans transformed the building into a luxurious place, which made it more beautiful. Now the Palazzio dei Normanni is the Regional Sicilian Assembly.
8. FONTANA PRETORIA The Fontana Pretoria was built in the 16th century in the middle of Piazza Pratoria. A Florentine sculptor designed it. It wasn’t meant to be there originally, but then the designer thought of Sicily and decided to put it there, so he, with the help of more people, had to dismantle and transport it to Sicily. The fencing around the fountain was built in 1858.
10. CASTELLODE LA ZISA This castle was built by the Arabs and was finished in 1175. In Europe, this is one of the best buildings built in Arabic style. In the past it was the house of King William lld´Altavilla. Later it was transformed into a fortress and then into a residence for aristocratic families. Now it is the Museum of the Islam.
12. TEATRO MASSIMO The Teatro Massimo is one of the largest opera theatres in Europe, and is one of the most important on Sicily. The theatre was started in 1868 by Gian Battista, and his son finished it in 1891. That is the reason for the theatre to have different styles.
