2. Are Video Games Art?
• The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), just recently
announced that they will be opening a permanent
video game art exhibit. This exhibit will be
interactive, and allow visitors to actually play the
games.
• The big question is, “are video games actually art?”
• One may not think so, however many museums have
been adding video game exhibits throughout the
years.
• During the late 1800's and early 1900's photography
was not seen as art. Today, however, photographs are
found in all kinds of art museums.

• Thomas Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann filed a
US patent in 1947. They called these games
"cathode ray tube amusement device."
• Video games became much more popular in the
1970s and 1980s. This was when arcades, game
consoles, and computer games became the norm.
• The Nintendo Entertainment System was
released in 1985 and was the best selling system
at the time. Many people view this as one of the
first and best at-home video game consoles.

• The Museum of Modern Art is not the
only one with a exhibit like this.
• The Smithsonian Art Museum in
Washington D.C. currently has an
“evolution of video games exhibit.”
• According to 20th century and
contemporary art
curator Marisa Pascucci, the point of
these types of exhibits are, “To push
the envelope and to broaden visitor’s
minds about what is art and what can
be art.”

• The Museum of Modern Art is one of the biggest
and most popular museums in New York City.
• The idea to create the Museum of Modern art
was developed in 1929 by Abby Aldrich
Rockefeller, who was married to John
Rockefeller Jr.
• Currently Marie-Josee Kravis, wife of private
equity legend Henry Kravis, is the President of
the MoMA.
• Over 70,000 artists are displayed in the MoMA.
• The MoMA has all different kinds of artwork,
including architecture, drawings, design,
sculptures, illustrated books, films, paintings,
and more.
