When and when not use a game as a mean or add gamification, what are the issues during creating a game that works and what are the latest insights. With a number of concrete examples Micah Hrehovcsik. Senior Game Design Lecturer and Researcher at HKU, university of the arts, will take you thoroughly in one hour, into the ins and outs of game design and let you understand what are the important do’s and don’t’s in developing a applied game.

To most people energy is still a low interest commodity. The transition to a sustainable energy system requires involvement, commitment and behavioural change. How can we achieve that using theory and research on human behaviour in this context? How should projects and campaigns be designed? The tool “Behavioural Lenses” is recently developed by Hogeschool Utrecht and creative partners to help designers put theoretical insights from the behavioral sciences into practical use. We will illustrate the possibilities of this tool for the energy transition, discussing several current approaches concerning energy transition.

Wouldn't it be fantastic to experience the heritage of the past - environments, buildings, historical events and stories in a Virtual Reality environment? Which new VR technologies are currently available to present this, and what is the extra value that VR technologies give to the human experience of the past (images, motion, sound, talk etc.) The cross-over pilot provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of Virtual Reality and 3D modelling. The cross-over shows us a wide range of perspectives and possibilities that can teach us about the exploitability and extra value of these ‘VR-thrills and -experiences’.

Nature heals, inspires creativity, and increases wellbeing. This is no longer a fancy thought, but these days is seen as an undisputed fact among researchers across a range of disciplines. At the same time, nature inspires designers, architects and painters alike. However, what is it that is so important in nature? This question remains largely unanswered, but its relevance for designers cannot be overstated. In this session, we bring together insights from design research, psychology and healing environments so as to: a) inform the audience on state-of-the-art findings from nature-based research, b) show how nature-based stimuli are currently used in a Dutch healing environment and to what effect, and c) demonstrate how such insights can be used to design multi-sensory nature based prototypes.

The Dutch Fashion industry is becoming a key player in the world of circular design. CLICKNL Next Fashion presents several design research projects that demonstrate that fashion designers and research institutes are ready for this challenge, as are the textile and recycling industries. At DRIVE we present three examples, and involve you in discussing how to take it a step further, get the industry even more involved, and the customer committed. Speakers: Anton Luiken presenting Closing the Loop; Marina Toeters and Anke Jongejan presenting Material Science and Design Fiction: Collaboration for Innovation in Fashion (“temporary” materials); Roos de Jager, about Strawberry Earth Festival.

Our ‘everyday’ is becoming increasingly connected. How can we design meaningfully and responsibly in a connected world? Rather than looking at the Internet of Things merely in terms of efficiency or profit, this session explores, using examples, how we can be sensitive to how products fit into our lives and society at large, and how to bring this to bear on how connected products are designed and valued. The session is the launch of a series of IoT design workshops across the 3 TUs.

Nature has been perhaps the most important source of inspiration for design, especially for design that strives to positively influence nature and planet earth. Many different design strategies have developed over the last decades, and many designers are familiar with eco-design, Cradle to Cradle, or biomimicry, and, more recently, circular design. But what are the differences between these design strategies, and how, as a designer, do you know which one to use? By applying these strategies to one specific design problem, experts on these different strategies answer this question. The results demonstrate that each of these design strategies is different, even though they are all inspired by nature. The different approach and focus of each strategy results in a range of design solutions. For designers, the challenge lies in understanding these differences and choosing the most appropriate strategy for the design problem in question.
