Lack of adequate sewage

5. INDUSTRIALIZATION
Pondicherry UT has no effluent treatment plant facility for
treating the hazardous waste generated by the industries.
No exclusive facility for treating Bio medical waste also.
The hazardous and bio medical wastes are dumped with the
solid waste and the effluents are let out in the sewage canals
directly.
6. ROAD AND VEHICLE DENSITY
No concrete and consolidated data on the statistics of vehicles
registered, the vehicles pollution control and inspection
Cyclists are finding it very difficult to travel since there is no
separate lane earmarked in the roads.
Pavements are encroached and the people on walk find it very
difficult to walk safely
Signals have no timing earmarked for the pedestrians to use
the Zebra Crossing
7. IMMIGRATION
Rapid industrialization, large number of laborers migrate from
rural to urban areas in search of job opportunities.
Resulted in the development of many slums with no proper
sanitary and waste disposal arrangements. Owing to
unplanned town expansion.
8. URBAN SLUMS
With increasing housing demands, many new colonies slums
have emerged without proper planning
Infrastructure is inadequate and basic needs such as sewerage
facilities are not up to bar.
9. WASTE MANAGEMENT
Untreated/ poorly segregated biomedical wastes are dumped
along with Municipal solid wastes, aggravating the health
risks for waste handlers and public at large
Large quantity of plastic waste thrown indiscriminately by
everyone from street vendors to supermarkets and public
which have resulted in clogging of all the road side, major and
minor drainage canals contributing to the breeding of vectors
10. WATER MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS
Ground Water Depletion :The excessive extraction for all
uses has caused a drop in the water table at a number of
locations such as Katterikuppam, Krishnapuram, Sorapet and
Ariyur
Industrial Pollution : Surface water and ground water have
been affected by industrial pollution.
